I was lookig into the Honda/Acura service technician course through Bcit and was wondering if anyone knew how much the average technician makes an hour at a dealership?
Thanks

$30/hr is what I heard. Not sure how accurate that is though.

Licensed dealership technicians make $20-$40 an hour depending on where you work and your qualifications. The flat-rate system is making a comeback too so you have to factor that in when calculating how much you actually take home.

Wow.. would have thought being a tech paid a lot better than that..

Are techs paid more at Benz/Audi/BMW dealers?

16-22 is like when you start as an apprentice, which is pretty normal.
there are some places that will pay higher as an apprentice.

And no, techs don't get paid that much more at benz/audi/bmw dealers.

My cousin had to work for free at Volvo as a tech for however long.. 6 months? Then started getting paid 13.. 2 years later and he's making 18.

Car guys don't get paid that much anymore.. but at least you can do side jobs and work on your own stuff. Truth is, you're only gonna make big bucks if you own a shop.

And no, there's really no big difference if you work for Honda or BMW, maybe $1 or $2 in your hourly..

Well when you start off, you won't be making that much. After you get enough experience, eventually you'll be making a decent wage.

But then everyone's definition of decent or good wage would be different since we all have different expectations.

It took me two years to go from a $12/h laborer to $30/h crew chief in construction with no relevant education, I'm absolutely shocked that the automotive industry isn't at least comparable since its a skilled trade. Do the dealerships sales guys make decent coin?

Where the fuck are you guys pulling this information out of?

Nobody works for free, apprentice or lower, that's retarded as well as illegal.

Honda/Acura pays pretty decent, it depends on the area and a bunch of other things, but basically in the 25-33ish range

BMW/european makes generally pay a little more, some times a lot more. I know a buddy making $39/hr straight time at BMW

I can vouch for the european makes from personal experience.

At the end of the day though, lack of information as an apprentice you'll get screwed over by cheap ass managers who try and hire you cheap. The dealerships that pay well are the ones that are busy and not a high turnover rate.

While flat rate and straight time is a huge difference in take home pay, the real difference in take home pay is in the tech themselves and their work habits.

The market's changing. A few years ago you have techs starting wage at 25 and up. Now you're lucky to get half of that.

These days you'll have managers saying "well if you wanna put in some time to help out around the shop, and if we think you're right for the job, we'll hire you on." Not illegal, as it's the job searcher's own will, no contracts signed, etc. My cousin was working for free for a few months until he finally got up and was about to leave, and they signed him on.

Of course there's always exceptions, this person knows a guy who makes this much, that person knows a guy who makes that much. Hell, I know a guy making 120k/year who spins around in his desk chair all day and going on Facebook. But those people were lucky enough to get their jobs when there was a bigger demand.

But OP's researching into the program, and I assume is asking for current market and for the near future.

^none of my numbers are speculation. I'm a licensed Tech, and I work for an Acura dealership.

My buddy that work for BMW isn't just some friend of a friends cousins neighbor. Ive known him for years, he works 2 dealers over from mine.

northshore automall?

To impulse X. Why did your cousin even take that kinda bullshit? That's actually the biggest bullcrap I've ever heard and your cousin took it like it was normal. That's not normal at all. And if he's getting paid 18 its because they know he'll take that crap because he did before.

If he's any good tell him to go apply somewhere else he'll be surprised at what the finds, in terms of wage.

WTF are you guys getting all these numbers from
What you make is completely dependent on the level of competency and and your work ethic.

Its never a good idea to base your future career on what it pays. You do what you love and become good at it and the money follows you along. There are many techs that i meet that got into because the money was good at the time but they get burnt out pretty quick. You gotta do it for the love of the game.
