My retina MBP hasn't shipped, but I'm not so sure of keeping it when it gets here.

My friend brought two of his brand new rMBP to me today so I could prep them with their favorite apps and what not...

I gotta say, the novelty of retina screen wore off sooner than I thought. When I placed my order after seeing it in apple store, it was WOW. Now, it's more like a "oh, cool!" and that's about it.

After using two of them for the entire afternoon, I will do a mini-review:

Pros:
Screen - even if the novelty wears off pretty quick, it's still a beautiful screen.
Speed - SSD, ivy bridge, kepler... enough said. Everything runs pretty smooth. Although I did experience the infamous "screen lag" that some user found due to the screen resolution, it wasn't a big deal in the 6hrs I spent with them.
size/weight - it's amazing how Apple managed to squeezed a 15" into a weight that most 13/14" models have.

Now the cons:
Keyboard - the layout is still the same, but the new rMBP definitely has a different keyboard than the previous MBP design. It now feels less clicky and more filmsy to the toouch. A big no-no if I were to type a lot on it.

Heat - OMG was this thing hot! I was just doing some installations on stuff like Picasa, PPTV, and configuring FaceTime at the same time... nothing major... but it was very hot to the touch and unbearable to leave on lap. Definitely not "laptop" friendly.

Software compatibility - mainly about the retina display... a few apps I installed looked liked 8bits...

All in all, I'm not sure justifying paying a premium for it. I think I'm gonna sell it for profit (if I still can by the time i receive it) when I get it and wait for the second gen rMBP instead.

Check the retina Mbp at the apple store today. Im
In love with the screen. It's like the first time I saw the iPhone 4 screen.

But the fact that it's not repairable by myself is holding me back. I have owned a Mbp for 6 yr and have change out the fan + SuperDrive + battery to make it last this long. If I'm gonna drop close to 3k on this laptop I very well expect it to last for another 6 yr....

Any MacBook air early adopter can chime in their experience?

The keyboard has less travel. You will get use to it. I spend a lot of time typing. I think it is fine after using it for a few days.

Mbp can run very hot, thats nothing new. This one actually produce less heat and makes less noise when cooling. And how often are you running the cpu at 100% anyways?

Software, well thats the price you pay to be on the cutting edge. Almost all the 3rd party software needs to be updated for retina display. I don't see this as a big deal since you just have to wait for a bit. Also there are video driver bugs when resuming from sleep. I see them fixing most of it this month with the release of mountain lion.

But for sure it is better to buy 2nd or 3rd generation rmbp if you don't need a new laptop right now. For the people that want the latest and best or can upgrade every year...this is a very nice laptop to get. Love mine.

I don't.

I do photography first and social media shit then video and then cats eating cheezeburgers on YouTube.

And I tried Aperture 3 yesterday. Still like Lightroom better. Waiting for it to be updated.

Hey guys, I wanted your opinion on whether or not to pull the trigger on this purchase.

I've got a friend selling a late 2008 model (unibody) 13" macbook for $580.

It's got 2.4ghz, 4gb memory, 320gb hdd and in pretty mint condition cosmetically.

The battery seems to be in good health and is currently running OSX Lion.

I've used my Sony Vaio for the longest time but it's starting to encounter problems and I figured I'd try out a mac.

Thanks

- the computer will be used for mostly web browsing, work documents, occasionally downloading movies/music.

Up to you. If it were me, I'd offer $500. Mind you, i had a Macbook for a while before I went to a Macbook Pro.

Thanks for heads up.

$580 does seem a bit steep for an almost four year old computer, at least in my opinion.

I'll probably just wait for a new macbook pro then!

thanks

i wouldn't get an older mac...mainly because of upgrade options. Macs aren't upgradeable at all, so i don't really see a point in buying a used/older one. Computers are becoming so mainstream for everything in todays age, that your just gonna lose money upgrading to ANOTHER new computer once the one you buy craps out. Better to just invest more now and let it last longer in my opinion...

Considering that the computer is 4 years old, support for up-to-date software is not going to last that long seeing how Mountain Lion is going to be out soon. (Apple usually only supports systems 5 years within launch/purchase)

MacBooks aren't any less upgradable than PC laptops. HD, RAM, optical drive removable...what else do you want? Where are there laptops where you can upgrade the processor, motherboard or video card?

installed OSX Mountain Lion on all my macs last night..... dictation works really well, haven't tried airplay mirroring yet since my Apple TV hasn't arrived yet. Finally I don't need to use twitter and can integrate with Weibo! Notes and Reminder as separated apps makes more sense.

Otherwise, most changes seems under the hood.

About to start school again in Sept, I currently have a Dell XPS 15z, I'm thinking of upgrading to a MBP, I bought this computer a year ago for $1300, is it worth the upgrade or should I stick it out till this shits out?

I'd stick with it if it's only a year old. Plus, I found more programs related to courses are compatible with windows more often.

My opinion is stick with it until it craps out on you... if you are starting school you will need the money for other things first.

Yea, stick it out. Computers just get so much more awesome every few years.
MacBook airs, the iPad, and now the MS surface have all been really great steps forward.

Can't wait to see what happens in the next few years.
