Sanctum

Sanctum, yup, it's the movie that no one would really care about until you see the word James Cameron as the executive producer (he was invited to produce the 3D part of the film).

The movie was "based on a true story" and it takes place in Papua New Guinea and it's about underwater cave exploration and rock climbing. Things go wrong and you can guess the rest.

I've done a year of real rock climbing at Squamish and I've been teaching Scuba diving for the past 10 years. I also have friends who does underwater photography (he did the lighting for I-Robot car accident scene at the UBC pool) With these experiences under my belt, I was able "appreciate" the movie, but I could never imagine my dad who watched it with me would get it if I wasn't there to explain it to him.

There's about 30% of rock climbing which wasn't hard to understand, but when it got to underwater cave diving there were a few technical aspects: decompression, getting bent, tri mix, rebreathers, full face masks, clearing of masks, going thru tight spaces, breathing from underwater tanks etc. You need to be a Scuba diver to really understand parts of the movie.

Back to the movie; because it was at Papua New Guinea, a lot of their dive gear were all sponsored from an Australia company and it's like watching an advertising ad the whole time. I'm not sure if the actors were Aussies or Kiwis but DAMN their accents were so hard to understand. They only had 2 people in the movie with decent English which really didn't help.

Story was OK, scenes were beautiful but the acting sucked, their accents didn't help, script lacked depth in character building, and it would be much more rewarding if their actually found something at the caves.

Acting: 5/10
Story: 7/10
Scuba and rock climbing 7/10
Was it interesting, yes it was, but I would wait for download: 7/10 for non divers, 8/10 if you're a diver / climber.

Hmm...so its more like a general interest movie. Well, its good to see a certain point of view; after reading that, made me a little bit more curious to watch it now. thanks.
