my knowledge of reactor cores and meltdowns are based on The Simpsons...so bear with me..
So from my understanding, the reactor is shut down but the temp is still at critical levels, are they venting radioactive gas to release some pressure as well? What's reality of a meltdown?
It's really hard to be 100% certain with what the news is saying, but my assumption would be that they are trying to prevent steam bubbles (Nucleate boiling) from forming in the cooling lines via atmospheric venting. Basically once those lines contain steam bubbles their ability to exchange heat is greatly reduced.
The venting would (should) still occur inside the containment building.

Chun, dude, is there anything you need us to do for you on our end? I'm assuming you let your family here know you are safe and whatnot.
Let us know, man..........
Hey, thanks for the kind offer. I'm all good so far here; stayed in all day so far just watching the news and sitting through some slight tremors (wow they seriously don't stop). Will head to the grocers soon to see if thy have restocked yet, else it's going to be rice and Campbells mushroom soup for the next few days hahaha.
It was hilarious when I called home after the initial quake. It went a little something like this:
"Hi mom, it's me."
"Oh hi! Hows it going?!" (super super cheerful and happy)
"Uh mom, turn on the news. I'm just calling to say I'm okay."
"Whats on the--... (two second pause) OMKSNFHDHNSBFNFJ ARE YOU OKAY?!?!"
Lol will never forget that pause hahaha. Posted via RS Mobile

Not at all... other than the constant news feed and the general state of caution you can see in everyone, you could barely tell that a massive quake hit exactly this time yesterday. Seriously, chalk it up to their preparedness fo Hess things.
Murdoc, there's not much damage in the city. You see some crumbled sidewalks but even that is pretty rare. The city really doesn't look like it was hit at all. Unfortunately, can't say the same for Fukushima, Miyagi an Aomori Posted via RS Mobile
jasonturbo, out of curiosity, what's your educational background?

I'm having major packet loss issues between here and USA, looks like mostly the cogentco.com routers... What's that site that monitors these? I wonder if it's due to the earthquake? I remember there was one a few years ago in Taiwan that knocked out internet for a few days
That one knocked out a few fiber optics under the ocean for a few months. The same thing probably happened again.

Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.
cesium detected outside of plant, they released vapour so it wont meltdown anymore but radiaton rose to high levels outside but not high enough to be life threatening

thats good at least. I know if something like that happened here I'm sure looting would go on. Has there been anything like that in the more damaged areas or is everyone acting normal I guess you can say?

Glad to hear you're okay. It's funny I'm responding to you thru RS
Take care over there buddy!
our magnetic field is all over the place. Planes wont be able to fly and with the tectonic plates in the ground they will move and cause more earthquakes. When we get hit here it could set off a chain reaction and start the pacific ring of fire which is a active chain of volcano's from Japan to here and down in Cali. Ocean currents will change with weather patterns and could let solar radiation through the ozone layer. It will basically be hell on earth but these are just guesses since a pole shit has never been recorded.
