Btw, you should link to the edited version, not the propaganda version that has acknowledged problems: http://mitnse.com/
I suggest reading the post just to get a sense of how the reactors work, but ignore the overly optimistic assessment (I think they might have been edited out as well) that have turned out wrong. Also take note that many things have changed since the post, so it's out of date.
Even better, just watch the MIT NSE Panel from real experts (note some bits are more technical): http://techtv.mit.edu/videos/11363-m...nuclear-crisis http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2011/n...apan-0136.html

MIT, what the hell do they know? I'd rather get my news from RS. Amen!

Hey guys, another update in Tokyo.
This was posted by one of my coworkers. Apparently, some people have set up Geiger counters all over the city and are trying to keep an eye on radiation levels. I can't attest to how accurate their readouts are, but so far, the results show that Tokyo is perfectly safe at the time being. http://bit.ly/i1mUY3
Some numbers taken from the sites from Google Maps show 0.07 μSv/h in Koto-ku currently, and 0.16 μSv/h in Meguro-ku (μSv = microsievert). An average dental x-ray is 40-150 μSv and a flight from NY to LA is 30-40 μSv.
Here's another company that works with detectors: http://www.bousai.ne.jp/vis/index.php
And this is their closest site to Tokyo in Kanagawa: http://www.bousai.ne.jp/vis/jichitai...awa/index.html
Apparently, 80 nGy/h is normal and we're seeing numbers around 70-75.

Everyone's a physicist behind their computer.
I'm glad to see people are at least trying to educate themselves on the topics a bit.

I feel bad for Japan. I just learned from the news many people, including rescuers from other countries, are evacuating Japan due to threats of a meltdown.
Meanwhile there are many who are resilient and lining up for just that one bus, that one gas station or that one supermarket. I am impressed with the strength of Japanese people. I get impatient just waiting in line at Subway :/ My heart goes out to Japan.

I've been following this for a few days and have heard a handful of "expert" reports that said thing wouldn't get to this point. At firsts everyone was saying it was nothing and that the biggest thing that was going to happen to these plants were that they would be out of operation for about a year to 18 months. Then stuff started to blow up. | Nuclear power plants don't "blow up." We're not talking about a bomb here. The explosions you see are from hydrogen gas reacting with oxygen, the radioactive parts of the plant can't and won't "blow up."

Not to say he doesn't know anything about nuclear reactors, but he does risk management, product development, etc day to day. He's in no position to represent MIT NSE, which apparently wasn't his purpose.

There's a rumor that a radioactive cloud just hit California and that geiger counters are starting to go crazy in the Southwest.
Here's a live feed of a geiger counter in West LA. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/live-r...medium=7558036 |
