Power cable reaches Japan plant

Engineers lay a cable to Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear plant that should allow pumps to be restarted.

Engineers at Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant have managed to lay a cable to reactor 2, the UN's nuclear watchdog reports.

Restoring power should enable engineers to restart the pumps which send coolant over the reactor.

I'll admit, I was worried (and still am a bit) that the fallout would reach over here. However, I don't think the Japanese will let this thing go 'core on the floor'. It would mean writing off 10% of the country, and I guess noone wants that.

Right...?

that has to be the most BS thing ever. I dont' get why people put up these crap, and scare people.

There isn't enough radiation from the plant to kill anyone, unless you're INSIDE the plant.

Chernobyl only did actual radiation potion in a 30KM circle, that could cause death in hours and i'm already stretching it. AND that was because it was an actual core meltdown, without a containment vehicle WITH nuclear reactions happening.

The plant's been shut off, you're getting radiation from the spent fuel rods, yes it's serious. But the Geiger counter crap showing insane amount of radiation to scare ppl saying it reached all the way to West Coast with the radiation level of say Chernobyl at your front door.

WTF? Don't ppl have any decencies?

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-0...accidents.html

Reactor 4 is shut down, but this is still interesting.

Quote:
Botched Container?

Mitsuhiko Tanaka, 67, working as an engineer at Babcock Hitachi K.K., helped design and supervise the manufacture of a $250 million steel pressure vessel for Tokyo Electric in 1975. Today, that vessel holds the fuel rods in the core of the No. 4 reactor at Fukushima’s Dai-Ichi plant, hit by explosion and fire after the tsunami.

Tanaka says the vessel was damaged in the production process. He says he knows because he orchestrated the cover-up. When he brought his accusations to the government more than a decade later, he was ignored, he says.

The accident occurred when Tanaka and his team were strengthening the steel in the pressure vessel, heating it in a furnace to more than 600 degrees Celsius (1,112 degrees Fahrenheit), a temperature that melts metal. Braces that should have been inside the vessel during the blasting were either forgotten or fell over. After it cooled, Tanaka found that its walls had warped.

‘Felt Like a Hero’

The law required the flawed vessel be scrapped, a loss that Tanaka said might have bankrupted the company. Rather than sacrifice years of work and risk the company’s survival, Tanaka used computer modeling to devise a way to reshape the vessel so that no one would know it had been damaged. He did that with Hitachi’s blessings, he said.

“I saved the company billions of yen,” Tanaka said in an interview March 12, the day after the earthquake. Tanaka says he got a 3 million yen bonus ($38,000) from Hitachi and a plaque acknowledging his “extraordinary” effort in 1974. “At the time, I felt like a hero.”

That changed with Chernobyl. Two years after the world’s worst nuclear accident, Tanaka went to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to report the cover-up he’d engineered more than a decade earlier. Hitachi denied his accusation and the government refused to investigate.

Kenta Takahashi, an official at the NISA’s Power Generation Inspection Division, said he couldn’t confirm whether the agency’s predecessor, the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, conducted an investigation into Tanaka’s claim.

No salt left at any grocery stores in HK.

We all know how amazingly well the Japanese have handled the situation. Imagine what it would be like in Hong Kong and China if it happened here? People go this fucking nuts as it is!

There is so much that makes the original 'reason' for buying it stupid, and then most of it is pure herd mentality.

Table salt is sold as "iodized salt" usually.. so the chinese words are literally "iodine" and "salt"

So they (incorrectly) assume that if there is a nuclear fallout that reaches Hong Kong (it won't) that there will be a shortage of potassium iodide (there won't be) and that taking salt will be effective (it wouldn't be). Nevermind the fact that radioactive iodine would be inert by the time it leaves Japan anyway, because of its <1 week half life. They are also ignoring that you would need to take about 3 lbs of salt per day to get as much iodine that is in a single dose KI pill.

But in most cases, it's just panic and ignorance causing it. Hence this quote from the paper today, when the reporter asked someone why she lined up for half an hour to buy several bags of salt:

"I don't know what the salt can be used for. But people are snatching, so I'd better hurry"

salt companies must be loving the profits.

edit: I wonder if their herd mentality comes from communism. I'll have to ask my sociology proff.

The people in HK have never known communism, so I doubt it. It might be a 'chinese thing' though

There is probably a great chance that most of the salt buyers in HK are taking it up to SZ to flip for a profit. There's nothing more honger than that

I wouldnt want to look like that much of a tard.....

Ever watch people buying and selling stocks...heard mentallity (for the most part) Doubtful they got that mentality from communisim....

Sorry that got off topic....I am starting to get sick of the media coverage that is taking place. They are only taking about the damn reactor situation, and leaving out the fact that many people are without food, water, shelter.....while I understand the need to cover the reactor, I think more time should be spent covering the human side of things....and then helping those that they see who need the help It makes me sad inside to see what humanity cares about the most....DRAMA

I think it also can be a human nature thing....often when we see line ups we think there is a deal or a must have even if we have not heard about it ourselves....kind of like boxing day the more people in line makes the crap they sell are the more valuable in people's perception...
