7.9 on the Richter scale!! My aunt is there and my mom is freaking out trying to reach her and her phone is dead. This JUST happened. My ex-gf just moved back there too and landed like a week ago. This is CRAZY! Call your family if you have anyone there ASAP.

I pointed out the problem with this argument.

edit* wow this isn't a joke thread, tsunami warnings issued for nearby coastal countries, maybe even Hawaii :S

maybe hold off on the calling everyone you know in Japan part. Too many people using the phones for such purposes often jams systems meaning that people who are actually in need of help can't use the lines.

HonestTea 03-10-2011 09:32 PM

Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Japan early Friday, triggering tsunami warnings and sending people fleeing out of buildings in the capital.

The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and waters underneath. In Tokyo, crowds huddled together and tried to reach relatives via cell phone.

Its epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said.

It triggered a tsunami warning for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.

"Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerous to coasts outside the source region," it said.

you're right- I spoke too soon. Hold off for awhile. hope my aunt's OK.

Spectre_Cdn 03-10-2011 09:36 PM

There was an earthquake of 6.x in the region several days ago too, iirc...

spoon.ek9 03-10-2011 09:37 PM

yikes... that is massive. i heard they just had an earthquake off the coast what... yesterday? hope everyone was prepared!!

Slifer 03-10-2011 09:39 PM

Damn 8.8..I think the biggest earthquake ever recorded was 9.5.

Boostslut 03-10-2011 09:40 PM

Wow, that's crazy hope it won't be too overly devastating!

murd0c 03-10-2011 09:41 PM

thats fricken huge. This will really show how all of this modern earthquake technology they have been using works at least. I so hope it won't be bad but I can't see how it won't be.

MapleApe 03-10-2011 09:42 PM

Oh no, I have a good buddy living there. An 8.8 is very, very bad in a heavily populated place like that.

monkeywrench 03-10-2011 09:43 PM

I heard it was 5.8 or 6 a few days ago. But wow 8.8 is devastating...

The_AK 03-10-2011 09:43 PM

some floods too

skyxx 03-10-2011 09:48 PM

Waiting for someone to go "2012, dun dun dun". Though it's quite eerie as more quakes and disasters happen within a shorter time frame now. We just had the flood in Australia then New Zealand's quake and now this within a matter of 6 months.

murd0c 03-10-2011 09:48 PM

Turn on CNN right now, it's just wild I feel horrible for them right now.

ursher 03-10-2011 09:48 PM

ohhh man...was just there in December too :/

shawnly 03-10-2011 09:50 PM

Largest recorded magnitude in history was 9.5; the earthquake that hit Indonesia was 9.1;

Definitely should be a wake up call for us to prepare for "the big one" we're expecting/due
