tinting fog lights

okay, well my car needs to be mechanically inspected before being allowed back on the road.

my question is if i tint the fog lights would it fail the inspection?

and is it legal to do? im thinking it is because some cars are not even equipped with them.

whats your guys opinion on this?

Raid3n 03-20-2011 10:27 PM

call up an inspection centre and they should be able to give you an answer more accurately. as they have the actual inspection guidelines to refer to.

k3mps 03-20-2011 11:57 PM

why don't you tint it after the inspection?
sorry if i am missing an aspect of it

Because it would still be illegal...?

Quicksilver 03-21-2011 09:21 AM

simply put, if the lights have a DOT stamp on them then they are legal for use on the road. As soon as you modify them, then they aren't DOT approved anymore and therefore illegal.

car is sitting in my drive way and well, im bored with vinyl tint lol.

that and if its illegal, i rather not get a god damn VI with JDM altezza front end.

Since you got a "jdm" front end that might not pass inspection from the lights / crash beam. Might wanna look into that as well.

And what's the stop a shady manufacturer from just putting a DOT stamp on them whether they pass compliance or not? :failed:

i did search, newest threads were from 2 years ago. and nothing about fog lights, just headlights.

Quicksilver 03-21-2011 05:45 PM

then don't buy from a shady manufacturer. Buyer beware.

Soundy 03-21-2011 05:54 PM

Er... the point is, simply having the DOT logo on your lights doesn't guarantee they're legit... contrary to your statement above.

i have a phD in physics, if you look at this t-distribution, based on the variables present the day i was caught with my tinted fog lights:

the lumens my fog lights puts out are exactly 1200 lum,
tinted fog/headlights are safer than conventional ones as they reduce the lumen output, therefore, allowing me to turn my highbeams on without blinding any oncoming traffic,
Huygens' Theory states that the equivalence of energy for a wavelength would be Y=h/mc = 2.43*10-12m.

therefore, this makes it okay and i will take the liberty of tinting the general publics vehicles headlights as this would be contributing to a safer society. thank you for your time.

I had a a couple safeties (If that's what you are referring to) done for ICBC for switching from one province to another. It really depends on the shop you go to. One pass me for no DRLs and one didnt, but it's a very simple check. light on PASS/no lights FAIL. Also, I think if you fail and corrected within X days there's no charge to change the finding to PASS.

if op knew that, he wouldn't put it on
otherwise, he just wants to get past the inspection.
he would pass it if he didn't have it on. (if true)
he can then put it on after he passes the inspection

zulutango 03-22-2011 06:14 AM

...and then leaves himself open to VT's for "failing to maintain to standards"..., the original "unauthorized lights" and very likely a further veh inspection.

baggdis300 03-22-2011 10:50 AM

i have never been ticketed like that. I am usually pretty damn cool headed with cops unless they act like a dick and i just play stupid asking them to explain things to me, last time i did that he started cussing me out and threw the tickets/vi and license at me hahaha.. I had a real good laugh..

Followed by posting in RS wondering how to dispute it!

zulutango 03-22-2011 04:04 PM

Nooooooo...the post first says that the Cops profiled him, gave him the paperwork without any grounds at all...and then were justa buncha jerks when he cussed them out. :fullofwin:

baggdis300 03-22-2011 05:07 PM

noooo

the COP started to cuss me out cause i was playing stupid and kept trying to get him to explain it to me, and when he did explain it i said i don't understand lol...

and yeah, i got profiled all black is300, including the front tints as soon as i passed the cop and saw him switch lanes(during TRAFFIC) to be behind me. i knew he was going to light me up

There is no profiling there, just in-your-face-obvious illegality. You sewered yourself from the get-go.

zulutango 03-22-2011 08:05 PM

Yah...the Cop profiled me for speeding just because I was exceeding the posted limit! Damn Cops.

how would they know the front windows were tinted when they were rolled down?

one officer actually rolled up my window using the driver side switches when i had gotten out to show one of the officers where my N usually was, and was there but cut out so there was about 3-4 CM of green around the black N

You didn't mention that.

Which is legal, to inspect the vehicle to make sure it is within compliance. The "N" Sign though, is not legal, which could be a reason you were pulled over in the first place.

There are lots of black IS300s out there. I highly doubt this cop has it out for all black IS300s. Yours just attracted his attention and the issues with it became even more apparent during the stop.
