Constantly Sick

Growing up i only usually got sick once or twice a year but a couple years ago ive been getting sick alot more frequently. This year its only May and ive been sick for the 5th time. They r minor colds like running/stuffy nose and cough but its getting pretty annoying. I eat fairly healthy and i do exercise so wat can it possibly be?

don't worry, my friend has the same thing.

i got viral bronchitis in feb, only to get bacterial bronchitis in march. and since then ive been coughing, and all that other crap and feeling semi sick on and off for 4 months now. went to a lung specialist and did a full check for everything. he said tons of ppl this time of the year are getting reoccuring sickness. just rest.

Drink lots of water and get at least 7hours of sleep.
When it feels like you're about to come up with a sore throat or a cold drink Emergen-C !

I bought a box and drink a pack a day and it's full of vitamins, most of the time your body needs more vitamins to keep healthy...but try emergen-C makes water taste better too haha

Another variable could include your house if you live in an old place with mould or maybe the air?

Have you been to the doctor?

Chronic illness often means your immune system is under stress. This can mean you're under stress, or not sleeping well, but it can also mean you have internal health issues you're not aware of.

You should go to your doctor and get a full blood panel done at very least. Also talk to him about things like celiac and allergies. You could be unwittingly exposing yourself to something that's toxic to your body.

do you know of any way to get the doctor to allow you to get full blood work done?
I want to know things like cortisol levels, thyroid levels, etc.

I can't just ask for it it seems unless there's a problem or I'm over 40.

This depends on your doctor. Do you know him well? If so you can probably just ask for it. If not you can go and complain of chronic fatigue and ask for blood work for that. They should test pretty much everything.

There's a new thing too where you can ask for internet access to your results which is really cool. They give you a pin when you get your test done and 48 hours later you can log in and look at all your numbers yourself.

I have to get my thyriod and blood sugar done a lot so it's pretty cool to be able to print out your stuff and keep track of changes and it eliminates the need for follow ups when everything is normal.

I have a Air Purifier in my room, and it helped alot during allergy season.

I dont sleep as well as i liked too, i wake up in the middle of the night..... like 1-2 hrs b4 i have to actually get up. But i do get my 7 hrs of sleep a day though.

I havent seen a doctor, plus i dont even have a family doctor

You need a doctor. This is important.

Oh if most of your problems are in your nose you should try...

I like the sinus rinse more than the neti pot. My daughter was chronically sniffling and when she started using this daily it's completely stopped. It helps a tone with enviromental allergies.

I would suggest the following:
-get plenty of sleep
-always thoroughly wash your hands, and keep areas that attract germs clean
-drink lots of water
-eat healthy (lots of vegtables, etc)
-try to avoid catching germs from other people (sharing food, etc)

if you're getting sick all the time i would suggest going to see your doctor

Contrary to what you'd think initially, people who catch the "cold" frequently actually have stronger immune systems than others. This is because the symptoms produced during a cold are your body's defenses. Your body is constantly fighting hundreds if not thousands of cold viruses 24/7, and many with weaker immune systems often carry a cold without any outward symptoms due their weaker responses.

Your description noted a runny nose/cough/sinus, and I'm also inclined to agree with the others that it could be due to an allergy to high mold/pollen or even dust mite content at your home. I would also advise vacuuming your carpets/sheets/mattress in addition to running a HEPA air purifier constantly.

One of the frequent causes of asthma (although all causes remain unknown) are the fecal pellets left by house dust mites -- microscopic insects that exist everywhere. They ingest the millions of skin cells you shed daily, and poo out fecal matter. Their gut however, has enzymes that digest the protein from your skin cells, and once you breathe these in, they try and break down the delicate epithelia of your breathing passages -- causing increased mucous secretions and an inflammatory response.

It is possible that when this happens, your immune system is weakened, and an otherwise average cold virus then attacks more strongly, and causes your body to react in a stronger way.

As a side note, temperature has nothing to do with people catching a flu. What happens is that the cold virus is essentially DNA/RNA wrapped in a fatty (lipid) membrane -- resembling a bubble. When someone sneezes, this membrane wrapped virus particle is shot out of your nose/mouth into the air around, and if someone breathes it in, has a chance of infecting someone else. Water however, is a very oxidative molecule, and if the virus hits water, the water will break it apart.

Under warmer conditions, there is usually more water content, and thus the distance the viral particle can survive is decreased.
When it's cold however, the decreased water content (drier air) means the particle can remain intact further -- up to 57 feet, hence having a longer life and increased infectious possibilities.
As well, when its cold people stay indoors more, and thus provides more chances for viruses to move to other people....

i always have a runny nose year around..gets annoying blowing my nnose all the time but im used to it now

boost your immune system. i work in health care and i see so many people with bad hygiene and lack of exercise/healthy foods. i have a friend who touches his face a lot, and that's after touching door knobs, money, tables tops, etc which is such an easy way to transfer bacteria. also vitamin C is your friend so eat fruits rich in that.

If it's not allergy related, maybe you are stressing your body out.
How much are you working out? Running a lot?

If it's more than say 5 hours a week (just generalizing, could be more or less depending on the person), I pretty much guarantee that is what is making you sick. Laugh if you will, but constant strenuous exercise causes increased cortisol levels and suppresses your natural immune defenses.

People exercising for 90+ minutes at a time will experience a steep drop in immune function that can last up to 24 hours. The drop in immune function appears to be caused by the elevation of stress hormones released during and following heavy exertion. This is what allows viruses to thrive.

Short Answer: Reduce stress on your body, and get more rest.

I have a couple of friends who exercise all the time, and they are constantly sick.
