^I don't know......... part of me says, good, but part of me says, it's a little harsh for a girl who isn't a hard core criminal. I kind of feel sorry for her. Community service time? I think she has learned her lesson. No need to completely destroy her life. Just my opinion.
The courts should make an example of some of the others who have a history of being drunken, disorderly hoodlums. What about that jerkface who rioted at the Vancouver Olympics? Obiki or whatever he calls himself. That guy should be neutered and raped multiple times in prison.
Blind justice. Do the crime do the time. I don't think you should handpick leniency based on her being female and not having a prior record. I know that sounds harsh and we should look to restorative justice, but there has to be a precedent.
I don't buy this "got caught up" in the moment nonesense. If I was there, I would have felt so embarrassed that people were doing this. You give people an inch (public squares to watch games outside) they take a mile (being drunk in public and rioting).

I know what you mean by being embarrassed. I had friends who were downtown that night and they left just after it started. They didn't want to even be associated with the crowd.
As for the leniency, I think any is bullshit. You broke shit or stole from broken shops? You should be getting the allotted time anyone else would be given.

I thought about this too but then again, I just re-read her original apology and how it was filled with excuses and qualifiers.
It does. Jail time is a deterrent that signals to people that what the rioters did is contrary to what society wants. If she is given a slap on the wrist then people won't truly be scared of rioting because they know the consequences aren't that bad.
It's telling people that if you don't want to go to jail don't riot.
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A UBC graduate who looted during the Stanley Cup riot has been sentenced, but will not serve any jail time.
Camille Cacnio of Richmond stole two pairs of size 42 men's tuxedo pants and a tie during the riot. The 23-year-old has been given two years of probation and will have to abide by a one-year curfew. She will also have to complete 150 hours of community service.
The judge in the case ruled Cacnios' limited participation and public vilification by the news media and social media have had a greater punishing effect.
Cacnio wrote a blog explaining her actions in the days after the riot. But in light of more negative reaction, she replaced it with an apology.
The court heard she was harassed at her UBC classes by other students. She's been fired from a total of three jobs.
Crown had been asking for 15 to 30 days to be served in jail on weekends while the defence sought a conditional discharge.

was just going to post
in all honesty that sentence is rather steep/harsh for what someone would typically get
not to mention she's already been vilified by her own community and lost her job etc etc
