Oslo bomb explosion wrecks govt offices; 2 dead

Quote:
OSLO - A huge bomb devastated the main government building in Norway's capital Oslo on Friday, and state radio said two people were killed and several others wounded.

Though the attack was on the very heart of power in the small Nordic state, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg was safe. There was no claim of responsibility.

"This is very serious," Stoltenberg told Norwegian TV2 television in a phone call. He added it was too early to say if the blast was a terrorist attack. He said that police had advised him not to say where he was speaking from.

NATO member Norway has been the target of threats, if not bombs, before, notably over its involvement in conflicts in Afghanistan and Libya.

The attack came just over a year after three men were arrested on suspicion of having links to al-Qaida and planning to attack targets in Norway.

"It exploded — it must have been a bomb. People ran in panic . . . I counted at least 10 injured people," said bystander Kjersti Vedun, who was leaving the area.

Violence or the threat of it has already come to the other Nordic states: a botched bomb attack took place in the Swedish capital Stockholm last December and the bomber was killed.

Denmark has received repeated threats after a newspaper published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in late 2005, angering Muslims worldwide.

The Oslo blast tore at the facade of the 17-storey central government building, blowing out most of the windows and scattering shards of metal and other debris for hundreds of metres (yards).

The building of a publisher which recently put out a translation of a Danish book on the Mohammad cartoon controversy was also affected, but was apparently not the target.

NRK state radio said at least two people were killed while another station, NTB, quoted a police chief as confirming it was a bomb.

A Reuters reporter at the scene said the blast scattered debris across the streets and shook the entire city centre around 3:30 p.m. local time. He saw eight people injured, one covered in a sheet and apparently dead.

The Reuters correspondent said the streets had been fairly quiet in mid-afternoon on a Friday in high summer, when many Oslo residents take vacation or leave for weekend breaks.

The tangled wreckage of a car was outside one building. This, as well as the damage to the buildings, appeared to witnesses to be consistent with a car bomb.

"This is a terror attack. It is the most violent event to strike Norway since World War Two," said Geir Bekkevold, an opposition parliamentarian for the Christian Peoples Party.

"So far I can confirm that we have received seven people at Oslo University Hospital," a press officer at the clinic said.

"I don't know how seriously wounded they are."

The district attacked is the very heart of power in Norway, with several other key adminstration buildings nearby.

Nearby ministries were also hit by the blast, including the oil ministry, which was on fire. Nevertheless, security is not tight given the lack of violence in the past.

Because it's not a brown guy, showing racial profiling does not work.

Norway is apart of NATO and is in Afghanistan.

here's a summary of what happened

Quote:
This guy (a norwegian nationalist) hates the government, blows up a government building in Oslo, kills I believe 8 there. He then dresses as a police officer and drives for about 45 minutes to a camp for teenagers to learn about government, he gets into the island by pretending he's there to provide security for the terrorist attack that happened in oslo, he tells the children to come to him and he will protect them, they all surround him/follow him and he takes out a machine gun and kills a ton of them. ATM there's 80 confirmed dead. He walked the island for about 30 minutes (I think that was how long) killing innocent 14-18 year old kids.
Slightly graphic picture of the killer with bodies of victims

Spoiler!

Police conference is on now. 84 dead at Utoya, putting the total dead at 91. Its not easy to follow the poor translation but they discussed this guy possibly being a Christian fundamentalist anti-islamist but the police won't confirm it. The guy said he would tell police why he did it.

I heard from someone over in Finland that the news there says he's a Neo-Nazi

my friends friend who's in Finland is a major bigot and he was singing for the deaths of all muslim immigrants into europe when this happened, even after the identity of the suspect was revealed he was going on and on about how there has to be a connection with muslims and they have to be involved

i could swear europes going to repeat history except this time it'll be muslims instead of jews

It's a fucken joke it's not plastered all over CNN right now. Come on 80 fricken people murdered by one person at a youth camp and there is nothing because it's "only" in Norway which doesn't matter to CNN.

That's just crazy... what a nut case!

I wonder if there were any armed security guards on that island or someone that was carrying firearms that may have stopped this earlier? Does Norway allow concealed carry for their gun owners?

apparently many Norwegians have firearms as they're avid hunters but automatic weapons are illegal for civilians

(this is from wiki btw so fair warning?)

Gun politics in Norway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

hand guns are legal but their are calibre restrictions

It's a youth camp, I don't think they ever anticipated a need for armed guards.

And it was in Norway, not LA, the kids have no need to carry concealed weapons.

Unfortunately, the media in general, as well most people, will focus on the guns and how the bullets killed his victims, instead of why he did it and how he was able to carry out a plan like this.

RIP to the victims... this guy is a total nut case and a coward for picking on those that were defenseless and unsuspecting.

That's what I meant... he picked the one spot where he knew there would be no resistance at all (gun free zones like schools and camp grounds)... very sad event that's for sure.
