Where to sell a returned diamond ring?

Hi Guys,

I want to liquidate the diamond ring I gave to my ex when we were dating. It was a promise ring.

Any place you recommend? Experiences to share?

She returned the ring when we split. Now its sitting in my room. I want to get cash for it.

Here are some info.

- bought from a Jewelry store in a mall
- 1CT
- SI/GH grade
- 3 stones princess cut
- 14k (not sure what this means)

I'm hoping to get as much cash as I can. Need your input.

Mods - I apologize in advance if this was posted in the wrong forum.

TIA

take it around, try taking it back to the store to get appraised, get an appraisal form.

will help you negotiate.

i went to this place on east broadway IORIO FINE JEWELLERY Ltd. - IORIO Jewellery Page

and they offered a decent price for the gold off my jewelry only, and said that "no one would pay for the stones" which was fair since the diamond earrings were little tiny stones that made a big cluster...but the heart shaped sapphire and not paying for it i kinda thought was bullshit. but you can give them a shot since its diamonds, they might pay a good price for it.

i'm sure there are places beyond what google tells you that would offer a good price for your rings, so just keep a look out and ask around. good luck!

+1.
That's an engagement ring.

Just skip the promise ring, next time. Those are for kids.

Unless you need the money my advice is to keep it for now, You'll lose 60% or more on it if you sell/trade it. If an occasion arises in the future, just pull the stones out and put it in another setting. Just don't tell the girl or she'll probably go apesh*t .. LOL

for the record, it is a promise ring. told her shes the one and i was going to marry her sometime in the near future. i was 21 then, she was 20. at the time, she wanted to be married by 25, so yeah.

i paid 1500 for it. i bought and gave it to her in 2008. we split last december.

i already looked into pulling the stones out and turning it into earrings for myself, but it was going to cost me a few bills for labour etc.

i dont want to keep it for the next one. i dont think i can handle that it had some sort of history behind it.

thanks for the input guys. i appreciate it.

Taking the stones out and making an earing out of it is probably your best bet since no one is going to pay you close to what you paid for the ring. what's left of the mount u can save it and then once you have a few you can sell it off in bulk since gold is always measured by weight.

Your ring's appraised value is *approximate* $4200.00, based on the info you posted in your first post. Keep in mind this is "insurance replacement value" not resale value. Resale is typically 1/3 of the insurance value....in an auction environment (like Maynards). Your best bet to get most amount of cash for it is via Craigslist in the jewelry section.

Scrap value of the gold would net you about $100.00 (based on about 4 grams of gold). That's using scrap prices off the vancouvergold.ca website, a local gold buyer. Not sure what they'd offer you for the diamonds but their website says that they buy diamonds.

If you want to do the earrings thing, it'll probably set you back about $225 for the earring settings, butterflies backs (both 14Kt white gold) and labour to set the stones. I'd imagine the stones would be 0.30ct each, total weight of 0.60ct.

At the end of the day, if you sell it as a piece of jewelry, it's only worth what your willing to sell it for and what the buyer is willing to pay for it.

Good luck man.

as for appraisal of jewelries, do i just walk in a jewerly retail store and theyre able to look at it and give me a value for the ring?

or do i go to somewhere specific where buyers would trust it more since its appraised on that said place?

Some stores have in-house appraisers. Others, typically the mall stores, have a "mobile appraiser" that comes to the store on a specific day and they do an "on-the-spot" appraisal for you. There's appraisers that work independently in their own office also. The end result should be an official document with a description of the piece, description of the stones set in the piece, the replacement value and the signature of the appraiser with a gemmological designation (FCGmA, FGA or GG).

You'll quickly discover that there's no such thing as a secondary market for diamonds and that jewellery does not maintain its value.

You're wasting time and money going to get it appraised because no one looks at, or cares about appraised values. Think about it - if you're paying less than appraised value at RETAIL, what makes you think you can get similar prices selling through a third party?

Consider the $1500 you paid cheap tuition in life and give it to the next girl that comes along. If you choose to attach emotions to an inanimate object that is incapable of changing emotional state, then you're setting yourself up to lose a lot of money.

If you're still feeling sad, I'll buy it off you for $250.

haha in not feeling sad at all. just being practical. i need money for other stuff, so why not try and liquidate it and try to get as much money as i can get. getting cash for it is so much better than having it sit in my room.

thanks to everyones input!
