Stomach discomfort

For about a month or a month and a half now, I have been having these stomach discomforts. When they first developed, I would get them for about 15-25 mins each attack and they would just slowly fade. I would get them about once every 3-4 days. Then as of more recently, I would be getting these stomach discomforts everyday and they would last up to hours.

I consulted a family doctor and he told me it's just stomach upsets, and he prescribed me Pentaprazole Magnesium. I have taken 4 pills of it, and I don't notice anything different.

The only possible causes I have narrowed this down to is:

- I started working out on in May, and gradually I have been eating a lot more. Perhaps my stomach is not used to this? and is being disrupted?

- A month and a half ago, I visited a Japanese place for their spicy sashimi don and I had stomach pains for that whole night. Ever since then I have been getting these stomach discomforts, perhaps it left me with a worm? or a stomach disease?

I really have no idea what to do.

had the same thing. I would even wake up in the middle of the night with it... eventually went away after a couple months. Nothing seemed to help it though.

@Vafanculo, does this stomach discomfort qualify me to go to the ER? not sure how that works

@Jgresch usually all my problems go away after a few months with no explanations of how I got the problem or how to treat it.

@SiRV Generally its the same, i would sometimes go out of my way to grab an extra meal from Subways or eat out at relatively healthy places. There was a period when I took QuickMass but I don't think that was the problem.

You are qualified to go to the ER whenever you want.. whether or not the staff in the ER think you're qualified is a different story. If it's a busy night, the wait will be HOURS (hence the complaints that there are long wait times etc.) but on really slack empty nights, you could be in and out within an hour.

At this point going to the ER would mainly be to just get a second medical opinion on what could be going on with you and possibly getting a new/different prescription to see if you respond. Are you currently on any other medications (advil/alesse etc.)?

No, I don't take any medications if I can avoid them. So only Pentaprazole Magnesium for now. Sorry for my lack of knowledge, so to go into the ER, do I just go to the hospital with my care card? any quick appointments or payments needed?

+1, I went to the VGH ER near Midnight and managed to get an x-ray relatively quick. This was a Monday.

You will want to avoid Fri/Sat, being popular days for drunks and altercations, etc.

And when entering VGH that night, a nurse mentioned if the wait is long, it would be wise to go to the Richmond hospital, shorter waiting time I suppose.

pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (ppi). what it does is limit the amount of stomach acid your body produces. the reason you are given this medication (generally) is because your body has been producing too much stomach acid and it's starting to eat away at the protective lining inside your stomach. in the worst cases, you can develop an ulcer where the stomach acid actually eats through your stomach and can get very serious from that point on.

basically the pantoprazole gives your stomach a bit of a break to try and recover it's protective lining. you will want to avoid all spicy foods and caffeinated drinks until you feel normal again. i find that avoiding deep fried foods/fast food is also helpful.

i've had this problem a few times and it's kind of a waiting game. take your medication as directed and watch what you eat. that's basically all there is to it.

Agree and they totally work if that's the problem. I've been taking Prevacid which is another type of proton pump inhibitor and if I forget to take it I'll know because I'll get discomfort. As long as I keep taking it I don't have any issues.

Oh man, do I have to keep taking the medicine then? It's pretty expensive. Today all I ate was congee and I didn't receive any pain. This really sucks because I just got into bodybuilding and I finally saw some results, now I can't even eat vast amounts of food anymore.

Tell you're doctor to switch you to pariet (according to the book its 28cents per pill vs the 80 cents something you're paying right now) + dispensing fee ($10). If you aren't feeling the pain anymore.. maybe you're getting better after having taken the pill for a few days? If the pain still isn't managed that well.. should probably see the doctor again and tell him, or go see someone else for another opinion on what could be wrong

damn, that sucks man.

i guess i'm lucky then. with a better diet and a more regulated eating schedule most people avoid having this issue reoccur.

Sounds like either an ulcer or your gall bladder.
Try cutting out ALL greasy and spicy foods out of your diet and see if that changes anything.
Your gall bladder is what processes the fat you consume and people are having "attacks" at a younger age than ever before because we eat so much processed and fatty food. Eventually it will wear out and a mild attack feels like pain in the middle of your stomach and can sometimes last for up to 24 hours before fading.
If you DO eat fatty food, drink something HOT during and after. It helps melt the grease and keep it from solidifying, therefore making it easier on your gall bladder and help process it faster.
Spicy foods definitely cause ulcers, or stomach discomfort. Especially if you are eating them on a regular basis. Everything in moderation. Don't overload your body with too much of one thing. Your body will fight back and be angry with you.

Drink LOTS of water, and take out grease and spice for awhile, and see if it changes.
