So my dad lost his spare key fob

i called toyota it is $330 + taxes to replace

if i purchase key from them programming is free

i see it on ebay only around $40-50 dollar

than i take it back to let toyota program it which is one our labor $120

so i proceed and called toyota, they cant confirm 100% whether it will work or not if it doesnt they will still charge me $120. I dont know if he is trying to scare me not buying it online or what...

can anyone else confirm please?

or anyone has toyota hook up?

You can program it itself... just need to find the instructions, which should be available somewhere online.

For example, found this for the 2002-2003 Camry...

1. Driver door open and unlocked. Key out of the ignition
2. Insert the key and remove 2 times in 5 sec.
3. Close and open driver door 2 times in 40 sec.
4. Insert the key and remove it again from ignition.
5. Close and open driver door 2 times in 40 sec.
6. Insert the key in ignition,
7. Close the door,
8. Turn to on and back to lock in 1 second intervals. 1 time for add, 2 times for rewrite, 3 for confirmation 5 for prohibition. (yes, there is no “4”)
9. Remove the key
10. Power lock will cycle to confirm
11. For add or rewrite mode within 40 sec of the confirmation,
A. press “lock” and “unlock” buttons of the FOB at the same time between 1 and 1.5 seconds.
B. within 3 sec press “Lock” button for more than 1 sec and release.
C. If it’s correct, the power door lock will cycle once. If it’s wrong the door lock will cycle twice.

But if it's a different year, try searching for it.

I did the same thing with my Yaris... found the instructions and programmed my own key, and it was something very similar to the above.

but i still need my key to be cut

while isnt there a chip inside the fob?

The chip is what you're programming with that whole door opening procedure.

And you can get the key cut at pretty much any place that gets keys cut, as long as you still have another one available to copy it from.

They still charge you if it doesn't work because they still did the labour. They aren't trying to scare you, it's just the truth lol. There's a few Toyota guys on here.

the procedure to program the remote and the key are different...

the procedure listed above will program remotes onto certain models... but programming a key on 99% of teh toyotas out there requires a tablet and proper software...

what kind of car is this??

i suggest replacing the key and leaving the remote... i may be able to help...

bought a replacement remote for my RSX-S off ebay and instructions to program it came with it. Paid around $30 and saved big money from buying from the stealership

I don't think so... a quick search shows people programming their own remotes for a lot of Toyota models.

^did you even read what he wrote? key =/= remote. Remotes are easy to program. Keys usually require the proper software

Just so we're on the same page, in this context, what is a "key" and what is a "remote"?

Unless I'm mistaken, isn't a "key" just a remote that's attached to a key?

I've done this before but I did it as a mod. A new key came out for my vehicle and I wanted that design.

Order a key fob from online with an uncut blade.

You will need to have that blade cut, hopefully you have a spare.

Now depending whether or not this key fob has an immo chip inside and depending whether or not your car has an immobilizer, you will need to get that programmed.

Keep in mind there are 2 different types of programming. 1) immobilizer programming 2) keyless entry function programming. The latter may be easy to do and the immobilizer programming would be harder. If you have 2 spare keys and one is just a valet key, you could take the immo chip out of that key and put it into the new one so you have 2 fully-functioning keys. That would be the cheapest alternative. Other than that, 1hr labor charge plus $35 for hardware is what you'll be looking at.

Again, it is easier to have the keyless entry programming done on your own than the immobilizer. When I did my car, I had to program all 4 keys at the same time or else they would be out of sync.
