I had an amazing miniature pinscher, I truly loved her, sadly she had a difficult life. She was purchased from a breeder who advertised on craigslist, unfortunately at the time my parents had just divorced and my Mom didn't have time to research the breeder much. The animals at their home seemed healthy, well behaved, but it became obvious as she grew that there were severe issues with her genetics. Sadly, after two years we put her down, she was suffering and nothing could be done, no matter how much we spent. The breeder was based in Mission and worked out of their home, this was a 6-7 years ago, so I don't remember the details and they may not be still be operating, but if you buy from a breeder out there be careful.

Oh and..

Consider adopting from the SPCA!!

MB is right. There are a lot of shady back yard breeders who do it to make a quick buck.

Try to do some research about the breeder and see how the parents are. But also in general, mini dogs have harder lives since they are breed to be small. As cute as they are, I do not agree with those tea cup dogs because of this reason.

There is a really good breeder you can find on kijiji, i got my golden retriever from them about 3 months ago. They are mainly pure breeds if thats what you are looking for.

Try adopting first. I am not going to be like those freaks who freak out when you do anything but adopt, but definitely, absolutely, see if you can find a small dog to adopt first. Spend as much time as you can stand.

Try asking your local vet...they may be able to recommend a good breeder.

Or, sometimes you can find organizations or clubs for people who own a specific breed...try googling their websites and see who they recommend.

Rescue or adopt from a reputable breeder is the best as the dog health condition is predictable. Unfortunately most rescue dogs arent puppies and reputable breeder's COULD cost a fortune.

Not all back-yard-breeder are bad, it's really hit or miss, with mostly miss.

In any event, I'd recommend a Daschunds. These guys are real clowns. I love mine to death.

I have had 2 larger dogs before but had to give them away when my little brother was born.
They were professionally trained to fuck shit up so parents didn't feel safe with a new baby around.

Because of that I fucken hate SPCA and will never adopt from them, one of them tried to run away and get back home, someone called SPCA and my dog mauled his ass and got put down. :'(

Just trying to find a reputable place to get a small puppy, I've experienced bad breeder first hand. My second dog was a Red King Doberman and was bread by 2 champion dogs, but the breeder didn't tell us he was inbred with father and daughter. FUUU

my wife kept checking kijiji and craigslist for about a year until she found a breeder that had the type of dog that we wanted.

going to try and find a dog over the next couple of months.
spca is easy enough to look into, but does anyone know of any reputable websites with a list of reputable dog breeders in BC?(i know this may be a stretch) I've googled, but I'm a bit iffy on the legitimacy. Would be great if someone had some experience!

Pay a visit to a couple of the local SPCAs, guaranteed you'll fall in love with a beautiful animal in need of a home before ever meeting with a breeder

I know of this website, but if the breed you're interested in isn't listed there's always local clubs for the various breeds.
There's also the Canadian Kennel Club site.

Another good resource site for breeders is Canuck Dogs
Canuck Dogs: Your source for Canadian dog event information online.
This is the link of all the breed listing. The Canadian Kennel Club ww.ckc.ca/ might have more though. Best bet find the local breed club and contact someone there to send you in the right direction.

Will be checking out SPCA shelter soon!
But if I'm going breeder route, is it pretty safe to assume legitimacy of a breeder if they have CKC registration papers? Or are those commonly faked or forged?

First post in a very long time, but this is an issue that's near and dear to my heart.

If you're looking for a small dog, there are literally hundreds of local societies dedicated to saving specific breeds from the high-kill shelters in California. My girlfriend has been looking at them for a while now, and they're definitely the way to go. There are tens of thousands of dogs just waiting to go to the gas chamber down there, so all you need to do is locate the local society responsible for that breed and tell them what you're looking for. They take care of all the rest. A lot of them know one another, so chances are one can point you to another, if they themselves can't help.

And since we're talking about small dogs, I may as well lighten things up a bit:

Lisa's great, our pups have been to a couple playdates at her daycare. We see her now and then at Clayton park.
