RPM when starting a car

You know how when you first turn your key and fire up the engine, your RPM surges to 2500 (or so) rpm with a nice perfect va-room and then goes back down to 1000 (or so) rpm?

Why is it sometimes it surges to 1500rpm or even 1000rpm, with a va-(choke choke)-room? Is this normal?

What's the reason that causes this?

Are you letting your fuel pump prime before trying to start? Or do you just stick the key in and crank right away?

It's good practice to turn the ign. ON then wait a few seconds for the fuel pump to prime before cranking. Otherwise you're cranking while the fuel's still trying to get to the engine.

yea i do that now.

was just wondering what causes the rpm to be different every time.

i'm no expert in cars, so i'll need to find where the iac is.
