Weds Sport Full Carbon Fiber Wheel

Weds Sport Full Carbon Fiber Wheel

The folks over at carbonfibergear.com posted about a new wheel by Weds Sport. This is an ALL carbon fiber wheel weighing at an astonishing 6 lbs! Yes, this is true dry carbon. This translates to about $10-$12k for a set of these wheels! Hmmm… at that price, maybe I should throw on some CF overlays on my wheels and call it a day.

Having had experience with all carbon motorcycle wheels, they are cooler than they seem. The only point is weight. They are not strong, and a BITCH to mount tires on without cracking/scratching/chipping.

That being said, they look fucking cool.

I believe Dymag is a blend of Carbon Fibre and Magnesium.

no fucking way it is 100% CF.
by the look of the weave pattern, it will bend once it is mounted and very difficult to balance

CF can be manipulated into different shapes, wheels included.

The only problem is that to achieve the exact shape might be $$$. And under latest innovation in CF manufacturing, CF can be very strong and yet with a a lot of tolerance to bending (it can be made to somewhat flexible) rather than crisp piece like before.

But again, very few have the capability of doing that and it's $$$$$$ to do it, all while making very little improvement. There are ways to make alloy wheels very light (although not as light as CF) at fraction of the cost. This is more likely the reason you don't see CF wheels in many racing/exotic rigs where money is not exactly a concern.

I don't trust these on bikes so certainly wouldn't on cars. The torque and g-forces these wheels would/could be put under would undoubtedly lead to failures. There's a reason carbon wheels are banned in every major motorsport association on two or four wheels. Yes they look cool and are an amazing and highly technical creation.... but they're not practical for anything other than a show car. Forged Magnesium all the way.
