car wont start!:(

hey everyone. merry christmas!
i looking to get some help for my dads car...his 2003 toyota corolla LE is not starting. it does not turn over or crank. we cant get it started by jumping it from any source (battery pack, running car, etc). all the accessories still turn on and work (from headlights to radio).

the other day when we left it for 8 hours (dad got it stuck while parked at VGH and had to bus to work) it started up fine. after leaving it at lordco for two days it still doesnt start.

a little bit confused. if it were a starter issue wouldnt jumping it still start it? worked for my civic.lol.

any help would be awesome. even to get it started to drive home would be awesome. thanks in advance. have a great xmas!

Have you tried to start in neutral instead of park?? if not give that a go, also put the key in the on position and the car in reverse (Block the tires/ use your e-brake or both) and check to see if the reverse lights turn on... If you cant start in neutral or park and have no reverse lights or can only start in neutral your NSS may need adjusting or to be carefully taken a part and refreshed.

If you can hear clicking from the starter but have no cranking then hit the starter firmly a few times (top and bottom) as the solenoid may be stuck.

Neutral Safety Switch (Only allows the car to start in neutral or park, Also turns on the reverse lights). Bolts onto the transmission, Expensive to replace but it is usually easy to take it apart and clean out the inside...

try tapping the starter with a hammer or piece of wood. I'm sure it could be the starter

^took your advice and sure enough it started up! thanks. guess that means it was the starter...

was shopping around for one...prices ranged from 150-219. would it be worthwhile to get it rebuilt? any recommendations of where to get it rebuilt?

thanks everyone for the help!

There is edmonds battery on KG and 64th, they probably rebuild starters there. If you are out in Abbotsford, I normally go to Jim's Auto Electrics. Otherwise keep that hammer in the trunk, my sister did that for about a year before she got rid of her car.

If anyone else have this problem on a toyota or honda, the cheapest way is to rebuild the starter. Parts would cost no more than $25 for starter contacts and a little bit of time less than 1/2 hr.

One of my friends brother in law had a battery that wouldn't hold charge, so for about a year he just parked on top of a hill or at a slight incline.

old post.. but 2003+ corolla starters do not have servicable contacts... Toyota remanufactured starters are not expensive tho...
