Maglite LED Flashlights

It wasn't until today I realized I don't even have a proper flashlight inside the house.
The closest one I found was an older incandescent Maglite....but it requries 4 C-Cell batteries

There was a few of these cheap "LED" ones http://goo.gl/S6KOU laying around the house. They either don't work, or they are super dim.

I think it's time to give Maglite another try. They introduced a new line of LED products, using the same bodies as their old incandescent flashlights, but using newer LED bulbs and technology. Their products, are no where near cheap....but they do offer a solid built and durability that will last a long time.

I'm looking for one, where I can keep at home for emergencies, "general" purposes, and maybe throw it into the car for longer trips.

MagliteĀ® Product line

Currently looking at either:
- Maglite LED XL100 / XL200 (the specs are near the same)
or
- Maglite LED 2/3 Cell D/C

I have ruled out the "Mini Maglite Pro" versions and their "rechargeable" products.

Anyone have any experience with their new products?

Product review from a Crappy Tire customer using the Maglite LED 3 D Cell version:

Cree Flashlights / "UltraFire" was another alternative. I came across them in Asia, and they are sold at many places.
The problem was....there's just way toooo many different version

Official website:
CREE Flashlight, LED Flashlight, LED Torches, LED Torch, Tactical Flashlight,Bicycle Lights

There's one in almost every size, shape, and length you can think of.
I never had the time to sit down and compare all the different models.

The ones I saw in Asia was not cheap either. Many versions work out to be $40-50+ CAD.

The ones sold by Amazon:
Amazon.ca: cree flashlight: Electronics
Still range from $29.99 - $89.99

Maglites are garbage. If you want a good flashlight buy a Fenix or if you have too much money buy a Surefire.

Since I bought my Fenix LD20, Ill never waste time on crap flashlights again. and it was $60 new.

If I'm not mistaken, UltraFire and Cree should essentially be the same company.

UltraFire claims they are "established in 1995. our head office is based in Hong Kong"

http://www.ultrafire.net/products.as...ame=Flashlight

When you look their products, they are very identical to Cree's flashlight
and some of the pictures even still have the Cree logo on it. (M3/M2/M1Q5)

NCIX sells them too:
NCIX.com - Featured UltraFire Flashlights - in Canada
Ranging from $43.99 to $99.99

It's questionable whether some of the "cheap" / ~$10 ones from on eBay / meritline are fake knock offs.
This was partially why I decided to go look into Maglites.
A more simple product line and a brand that can be trusted for sure.

lol I have 3 different sized led mag lights Im sure there are better ones out there but I like them for what they are my only complaint is that they have that dim ring depending on how you focus the light. However I do prefer led panel type flashlights now since they give out a wider beam of light and easier to place on objects

Which models do you have?
I think their new "XL" models should eliminate your dim ring problem.

I have the 2 D LED Maglite in my car. It's not great but I guess it works in a pinch and makes a good weapon to whip someone over the head.

I have a 3 D Maglite as well with an 3W Terralux LED conversion bulb. (there's lots out there on the Internet and many of them are more expensive than the Maglite itself)

The best "budget" LED flashlight I've used so far is the Romisen RC-N3 with a Q5 LED. It's fairly well constructed - much better than the Ultrafire WF-501 that I have in my car. The only problem with a lot of these budget LEDs is the exaggerated lumen claims and the poor heat dissipation of the flashlights. My WF-501 gets too hot to touch after using it for about 10 minutes. (to the point your skin would turn red if you touch it) Generally however you'll get what you pay for.

Haha, that's so ironic since they're a blatant rip-off of Surefire.

Cree makes the LEDs themselves. Ultrafire makes the flashlight housing.

to clear up some confustion here:

CREE makes the LED bulb used in the flashlight. there are several different LEDs available from CREE

Fenix, Surefire, Ultrafire, etc make the flashlights themselves using CREE bulbs.

Ultrafire is a china brand flashlight so obviously its a knock off. I posted that one up because I've got a buddy whos a pretty big flashlight nut and he say, and I quote "I have a [Fenix] Ld20, tk15, tk21 and a tk41 and the Cheapo ultrafire outshines all but the tk41. " Its like $25 on ebay and comes with a charger and battery.

some people buy a new $600 phone every 6 months for no reason other than to just have the newest one.

when you spend as much time in the bush camping and 4x4ing as some people do, you want a good flashlight, and you want a good knife. and those generally last a lifetime.

4Sevens - 4Sevens.Com

Fairly priced, REALLY bright, and very reliable. I own a couple and I've never had a issue with them. A majority of my co-workers use them for work and personal use and I haven't heard anything but good things.

A majority of their flashlights use AA or AAA batteries. I use rechargeable Eneloops and they output the max rated lumens with no problem.

The thing I love about the maglite is if someone breaks in, you can find him and then knock him out with it too.
