Amp suggestion

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right section to post this if not mods can you please move it to the proper section.
I have a Kicker KX 550.3 amp just running 1 12" sub right now looking for a bit more bass, thinking of getting another amp somewhere around 500rms. What would some suggestions be? Alpine? JL audio? MTX? JBL? open to suggestions.

Ernie

There are several kinds of 500 watt amps on the market. I have some questions about your sub before I could ever offer any suggestions about the type & quality of amp to look at.
What is the impedance of the sub? Is it a single 4 ohm, dual 4 ohm, dual 2 ohm?
How much space do you want to give up (some amps are really small and highly efficient, but cost more for those reasons)? How many amp hours does your battery hold (can your electrical system handle certain power hungry amplifiers, ie; RF)?
What kind of music do you listen to ( some music requires the damping factor of the amp to be very high to handle the kickdrum bouncing so quickly)?
So rather than offer you my biggest money making amp that I sell, I need to know what is in your best interest.

Its a dual 2-ohm. Its in a 2000 civic coupe, I would like as much trunk space as possible because I do use the trunk a lot. I listen to mainly hip hop but everything else too.

This.

Is why I love our RS sponsors, and why everyone should support the small independent shops. No way in hell would the snot nosed teen working at bestbuy, know to ask you these questions.

OP, I'm in a similar boat as you, looking for a smaller, 2ohm stable amp, pushing around 500rms. Orgasm_donor showed me a sexy little Fusion amp that would do the job quite well. Maybe this one would work well for us as well? I can't remember the exact specifications though (model number, etc)

That's good to know. 2000 Civics have very small batteries, so you'll want an efficient amp. Dual 2 ohms make either 1ohm or 4 ohms. Most sub woofer amps in the 500 watt category are meant for a 2 ohm load.

I have two that are a little more than 500 watts at 1 ohm. One is a PPI amp with 550 watts for $400.00 and the other is a Kaption 600 watt for $350.00

You could also run it the other way (at 4ohms, bridged mono with a two channel amp), but it will tax your electrical system too much, in my professional opinion.

Audioque AQ1200D, 510rms @ 4 ohms $300 from their website. Consider getting a custom enclosure made for your sub because it may just be your box.

Thats a good price BUT, I have seen two Audioque amps that have been purchased by customers of mine that have failed within hours of running them. I have had two subs come in with faulty dust caps too. Not sure about their quality control.

And yes, I agree with custom boxes. Can't beat a well built enclosure!

Your Kicker amp does 420 watts at 2Ω. You may want to look into getting a SVC 2Ω sub, or a dual 4Ω sub as other options, to get the most out of that amp. Running at 4Ω right now the amp is only putting out 210 watts. Kicker KX550.3 (04kx5503) KX-Series 04KX550.3 3-Channel Amplifier

Good luck. I had the same amp, it is a decent one.

These are the proper questions to ask before deciding on an amp.

We don't even know what sub he has, what it can handle, what car it is etc etc. Could be as simple as changing the sub enclosure to get what the OP wants.

When it comes to amps that don't cost a arm,leg and a left nut, nothing beats Digital Designs amps,I recently had a chance to see what they can do(more like hear),very impressed to say the least.

Please don't support Visions. The salespeople who work there are terrible to deal with, which I'm sure has a lot to do with the way they're trained... But still. Never in my life have I ever been 'put down'' like I have there. Because whenever I went there, to buy something that was on sale in their flyer, they are always so quick to say it's 'garbage' or 'dont waste your money', then they try to up-sell you something completely out of your budget, and tell you you're getting a way better deal, blah blah. After a while, it became fun to argue with them on purpose lol.

You may be wondering why I even bought stuff there to begin with... Well, for a while there, all I got from family members for bdays and Xmas were visions gift cards. Now they know better

Please do yourself a favor and support a local independent shop (like the rs sponsors!)
