| Rear glass shattered while closing door
So my friend has a 2009 honda civic that she bought new. Yesterday night she drove home and parked the car in the garage. As she closed her driver side door the rear glass shattered somehow. I'm not really sure how this happened but she went to speedy auto glass, got it repaired and paid the deductible.
My question is would she be able to claim it through Honda's warranty? I imagine that even if she could, it might be hard to prove that the glass just shattered on its own.

how does that even happen? i don't think by closing a door the pressure inside the interior is gonna shatter the rear glass? and why specifically rear glass shattered and not the windshield or other glasses? explainations??

this stuff happens more often then you think.
my uncle's '89 accord had it's rear window shattered by an ambulance + police car just passing by with the sirens on. ICBC did not even question it and replaced it.
Same thing happened to a family friend's 3-series couple years ago
though closing a door.... can't really think of a way to make a high-pitched sound like that

Perhaps she closed it with so much strength and so quickly that it caused a dramatic increase in pressure within the cabin. All this built up pressure had to be released somehow and found its way by breaking through the weakest point - the rear side window.
......
Yeah, I can't really imagine how that happened unless the window was previously cracked or somehow weakened and the vibrations from closing the door was the final push it needed to break.

Happened to my 2009 civic too a few months after I got the car, except it was parked outside overnight around -5 degrees during winter. My mom started the car to warm it up and turned on the rear defroster and then went back upstairs. She goes back to the car a few minutes later, opens the door then closes it and the rear glass shattered
Tried arguing with Honda for a bit but they didn't cover it under warranty, even though the same thing happened to a few other civics too :/

Lol figures post a picture of the rear glass and I get bashed for the rice on my car that was over a year ago. Typical revscene but yeah I'm not gonna deny how rice it is. Also not gonna bother explaining every single thing on my car that's wrong in the picture because I would go on forever, just gonna say that the car doesn't look like that anymore.
Back on topic, got my glass replaced by speedyglass as well and it never happened again, though I keep finding small pieces of glass hidden away here and there even up to this day :S

The integrity of the window glass must have been compromised someway before. I can't imagine how fast you have to close/open door to create such pressure differences. Seems like you were really unlucky...

Should be a viable issue if there are previous cases of the rear glass shattering.
Best thing to do is to notify Honda Canada and go from there!

Hot water for de-icing the morning frost??
I know most of us here wont do that to our own cars but maybe that is what caused the weakening of the rear glass consistent lazyness by throwing warm/hot water on the windows to de frost them quicker then years go by and finally the window gives in... Possible? |
