Height of DRL
 

Hey, I've done a search but couldn't find anything specific on this matter.

My car is currently using stock fogs with white halogens as the DRL. They are well within height specifications of 30cm and are not bright or blinding at all.

I'm planning to lower the car soon, but I just realized that after lowering, the fogs will be sitting lower than 30cm from the centre. However, the very top of the reflector housing is still above 30cm.

Am I violating the DRL regulations? Thanks.

Don't think there's a required height for DRLs but I might be wrong. I've seen MDXs that use fogs as DRL and Porsches have LED DRLs that are on the bumper

Dealing with the headlights and the fog lamps....if you lower your car ....both lights must meet the height requirements. Will yours now..?


Fog lamps

4.11 (1) A motor vehicle may be equipped with 2 fog lamps, mounted on the front of the vehicle below the headlamps, that are capable of displaying only white or amber light.

(2) Each fog lamp must be

(a) mounted not more than 30 cm below the headlamps, and

(b) adjusted and aimed so that, at a distance of 8 m from the lamp, the centre of the beam is at least 10 cm below the height of the fog lamp.


Headlamps

4.05 (1) A motor vehicle must be equipped with either one or 2 headlamps mounted on each side of the front of the vehicle and capable of displaying white light.

(2) The headlamps must be mounted at a height of not less than 56 cm and not more than 1.37 m.

Just a quote from the regulation act.

Daytime running lamps
4.08 A motor vehicle may be equipped with daytime running lamps, mounted on the front of the vehicleat a height of not less than 30 cm and not more than 2.11 m, that comply with the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Canada).

So where do I stand... to which point do they measure the 30cm off the ground?

I guess the question is how does the MVA define the term "lamp"? Is it the bulb? Is it the lamp assembly including reflector?

If I was a betting man, my money would be on the bulb.

i would think it would be the same as the headlamps which iirc they measure from the centre of the lens.

Would it be better to wire the headlights as the DRL then? Or just turn off the fogs via the switch now instead? Rather avoid as many problems as possible.

Are you allowed to re-wire the lights providing that the resulting operation of the lights is compliant with the MVA and the CMVSS?

Well in actually, I had changed the DRL to the fogs because I wanted control over it as they were in my low beams previously with no switch.

It was a very simple wiring mod and can be changed back easily.

Hey guys, just wanted to bump this back up as Sunday is gonna be the day when I can get some work done on the car.

I was walking home the other day and noticed the new Benz's use LED DRLs in the fog area that also seem to be pretty low.

If anyone else has some more insight on this, that'd be great, thanks!

Since you changed the DRL's to the fog lights, I would suggest moving them back to the low-beams as they came originally on the car.

AFAIK, measurements are typically made to the center of the light, usually the bulb itself.

Perhaps MB has either received written approval to install lower DRL lights, or it could be one of those things that slipped by the enforcers. (Just like the BMW X5s that shipped without fender flares wide enough to cover the tires)
