2012 Autocross Season - VCMC, UBCSCC, PCA

I've been casually going to autocross for years, it's honestly a lot of fun and a good relatively cheap way to push your car to the limit, legally.

Most people new to autocross ask these kinds of questions:
Q: "But my car is stock, should I still go?"
A: Yes. The stock classes are some of the biggest ones. And it's frickin fun pushing your car in a safe and legal environment. Better here at a wide open airport than out on the street.

Q: "But I don't drive a fast car, what's the point?"
A: Because it's fun no matter what you drive. And people come in automatic TSX's and Yaris's and they do great. You're also placed into a class according to what car you drive, and within your class, it's all driver skill.

Q: "Won't this screw up my car?"
A: No. And each run is 40-50 seconds long, ~6 runs per autocross event, for a total of 4 to 5 minutes.

Q: "Does it cost a lot?"
A: No.

Q: "I don't have a helmet?"
A: They provide them. Just show up.

You have three choices when it comes to autocross in Vancouver. VCMC, UBCSCC, and PCA (Porsche Club). All three are open to anyone with any vehicle (unless you drive an SUV, I don't believe those are allowed), of any skill or experience level. Turns out a lot of us on Revscene drop in to all three, so chances are, if you post on here to ask about it, a few others will be going. Information is listed below.

VCMC is one of the bigger ones and has the Novice Championship Tour. If you've had less than three events under your belt, you're eligible to run under this.

VCMC Autocross Schedule:
April 8, 2012
April 29, 2012
May 13, 2012
June 3, 2012
July 28, 2012
Sept 15, 2012
Sept 29, 2012
Oct 14, 2012

More info:
Spoiler!

UBCSCC also runs a series of autocross events, and it usually works out that the schedules don't overlap - meaning if you're wanting to maximize your autocross time this summer, you'll go to both like a lot of us end up doing

UBCSCC Autocross Schedule:
April 15, 2012
April 22, 2012
May 20, 2012
June 22, 2012
October 7, 2012
October 28, 2012

More info:
Spoiler!

PCA also runs autocross events and is open to non-porsches.

Porsche Club Autocross Schedule:
April 7, 2012
May 12, 2012
May 27, 2012
July 8, 2012
August 19, 2012

More info:
Spoiler!

*note to everyone - please PM me if you catch any inaccurate information in this post, or have suggestions on format / presentation, etc.

+1 for this

dont have to drive a fast car to have fun!

remember to attend NCT (novice champion) and try to win! most importantly have fun!
a stock car is more than enough to be competitive

you have cars that lots of people race that you would think arent capable of!
crx, civics, miata, neon then you have 135i, s2000, 240sx just to name a few

ive placed 3rd in NCT last year, had a very fun season and this was BEFORE we got to use the Full pad
be sure to atleast check this out once!

You know there is an AutoX section to this forum, right?

If were doing this, check out UBCSCC | University of British Columbia Sports Car Club as well. We also run AutoX events and on average have the highest seat time out of all the local clubs. We are also a non-profit UBC club, run by UBC students. Next event is April 15th.

I'm a mod, of course I know there's an AutoX section to this forum

There is more traffic in VAC, plain and simple. If you have a problem with me spreading awareness, you can PM me with a complaint.

Good point on UBCSCC though, I will add that.

You'll find some stock cars do really well in autox. The biggest deciding factor will be your tires, because stock class in AutoX are allowed to run Racing-Compound tires.

Honestly, I found that having gone to a few autox events, is that comparing yourself to some of the senior drivers is extremely hard, because most of them have been doing it waaaay longer than you have. It's just fun to learn the limits of your car, etc....

Can't wait for this event, the UBC events this year and VCMC's Velocity driving school coming up.

Going to be a great year of autox. With the new pad we will see many more runs, stronger competition and faster courses.

Just to add to the stock car topic.. VCMC will also be running the new Road Tire Index group. Fantastic for newcomers to compete in the 1st day with a stock car.

Show up early, meet some people, get some ride alongs with fast drivers and have fun!!

Don't forget about the new STF pax guys!

I think this is the list of cars in the new run group, generally heavier FWD cars. This group has a great PAX of 0.787 and I'm excited to see how they'll fair.

Acura RSX
Acura TSX
Honda CR-Z
Honda Civic (2001-2005, all)
Honda Civic (2006-2011, non-Si)
Honda Fit
Ford Fiesta
Ford Focus (all)
Kia Forte/Koup
Lancer (non-turbo)
MINI Cooper (non-S)
Mazda 2
Mazda 3
Mazda 6
Scion tC, xA, xB
Toyota Corolla (1998-2011)
Toyota Yaris
VW Golf 2.5

Looks like RS turnout is going to be decent this sunday

Do they provide a layout of the track?

Any first timers heading out? Looking for some rookies to tag along with..

Is there a difference between stock and slightly modded for Novice class? (ie. springs & bars)

damn, don't think the 240 will pass tech, but cruze gearset is pretty torquey in 1-2 which could be fun.

is there an updated class list online so I can look up the cruze?

The Sports Car Club of America - About

Go down to Solo, and the 2012 rules are there. It's pretty wordy, as it really depends on what sort of mods you've done to it, whether you belong in Stock, Street Touring, Street Prepared, Street Modified, etc, etc... and then within each of those categories, there's more specific classes.

Unless you haven't done anything, period, then you'll definitely be in stock :P

if that's the case, you'll be in H Stock

*edit* nevermind, you found it...

They'll have course maps there, but you'll also get a chance to walk through the course on foot when you're there. I recommend riding with a senior driver once or twice before you drive if you have the chance, allows you to remember the course better. That or get a senior driver to ride WITH you, and they can help you point out where the turns are and stuff. And definitely take it slow the first time around.

and if you just want to have fun without getting caught up in classing/pax/uber-competitive stuff, and prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, my Porsche club events are always open to non-Porsche owners as well.

If you're wheels are 7.5" or narrower you fall into STF, IIRC ST doesn't exist for 2012, it's either STF or STC. If your wheels are wider than 7.5" I think you have to run STX
