Response time for non-emergency line

I'm super creeped out right now because a number has called me leaving a very creepy voicemail, a male voice saying in a very airy, and breathy tone "have you checked the children." I called the number back and all he said was "hi" in the same airy and breathy voice then hung up. He also texted me while I was on the line with the non-emergency with "have you checked the children."

I have no idea who this is, I don't know this number. I called the non-emergency line and spoke them about this, and they took my all information and the unknown male's phone number.

The woman on the line said that they would either have an officer contact me by phone or in person to listen to this voice mail and investigate. She also told me to keep a log of all the calls and what happened during the calls.

I'm extremely scared and creeped out right now, especially if children are involved. I don't care if this is a prank call or if he's calling the wrong person, its scaring me a lot.

The woman on the non-emergency line couldn't give me a specified time as to when an officer might contact me, but for those who have called in before, how long did it take before you had someone contact you?

Thanks in advance.

pretty sure the number is for TOS'd, but on the plus side it wasn't a text so it's not serious.

CMP non emergency line 3 years ago and it took them about 50 mins to respond.

People still make prank calls all the time, I just learnt to play along and try to screw with them back.

About a year ago I came home around 1am and saw 2 crackheads smoking crack in the underground visitors parking lot, so I called the non emergency hotline.

The lady took their descriptions, my information, and told me an officer should be in contact with me soon. I waited for about 45 minutes watching TV and nothing happened so I just went to bed.

Around 3am the cop calls my number I left with the dispatcher, and asks me to come to the door.

At first I was like but I went down anyway...He was super apologetic about coming so late and told me he'd patrol the area more often.

/endstory

Took them 2 hours that time...next time if I can't decide if it's an emergency or not I may lean towards 911.

They took my case quite seriously. The thing about "have you checked the children" is definitely from a movie. The police called me after they left my house and asked me I I babysat or anything and I said no. And apparently from the log/report that I gave them, the goof is calling me in sequence with how it happens in the movie. There are texts involved too. The police told me to contact them if I get anymore calls or texts from that number. I think they saw how genuinely freaked out I was by this and they definitely take me seriously. Thanks everyone

this happened to one of my co workers at my old work.
definitely wasn't cool because she had a 2yr old and a new born.
she called 911 straight away because she didn't want to risk waiting.
don't know what ended up happening but I'm glad everything went better than expected.
not cool when your family is involved

non emergency line response time depends on current workloads. It took just over an hour fro them to respond when I called and the police were apologetic that they couldn't make it sooner as they were swamped with calls. However, the reason I called was really a non 911 situation so I wasn't gonna call 911 to get a faster response.

However, for the OP, in my situation, I may have called 911.

i believe it depends how urgent the nature of the call is. if it is someone's life's in danger or if it's a safety concern, or crime in progress, etc. obviously they would dispatch someone to investigate sooner than if it is something that could wait.

I think we have missed the whole point of the "non-emergency" number. If it is an emergency call the emergency number...if it is not an emergency, then it is a non-emergency and they will get to you when they can, after dealing with higher priorities.

Are 911 and non emergency line calls handled by the same calltakers?

In my experience if you call the Detachment number, you get the Detachment. The recording tells you that.."if this is an emergency, hang up and call 911". Our clerks at the office are not operating from a 911 call centre nor do they have the training or gear.

Ah. I was thinking VicPD where they do have the 911 call center in the same building.

lol, man this depresses me I guess calling the police non emergency line is like calling any other tech support office... whether you'll get real help depends on who you get that day... you get serious help for a prank call and I couldn't get jack for something more real

I used to see crack deals literally every day in my old neighborhood in the alleys, ironically right underneath the neighborhood watch (all suspicious activities are reported to the police) sign.

I had to do something because of the kids in the neighborhood always playing in the same streets, so I would call the non emergency but I couldn't even get a squad car to come by take a look, cop on the phone just tells me casually "oh just give us a call next time it's happening, we'll come by check it out"
I'm thinkin this lifetime officebound bitch ain't ever hit the street in her life, hasn't a clue of what a drive by crack deal looks like, cuz that shit is over by the time I would even get through to someone on the 911 emergency line, let alone the non emergency

Best thing to do is phone it in as a driving complaint, not a drug complaint. You'll have three officers show up within minutes
