Dirtbiking newb wanting to get into dirtbiking

Hey guys,

So I had a few quick questions,

I'm looking to get into dirtbiking, and I was wondering if you could throw street tires on a dirtbike and insure it?

Also, What is a decent sized bike for a big guy? I'm 6'5 and 230 lbs. I just imagine myself looking silly on a dirtbike since I'm so tall. Ive heard from a few friends that the larger the CC, the larger the bike (usually).

I guess I would lean towards a honda? I heard chinese bikes are crap. I got a budget of roughly a grand. I am mechanically inclined so I have no need for a brand new bike.

I would also be down for buying a blown up one and rebuilding it :) Tips appreciated! I don't know if this forum is for street bikes or street/dirt bikes, Appreciated !

Basically a dirt bike is off road only, unless you get a dual sport that is insurable.

Stick with well known brands because things will break and wear out. There is almost no aftermarket support for the knock off bikes.

Saying as how your partial to Honda's I would look at 80's xr250s, good reliable bikes few friends owned them throughout the years with no major problems. Not huge on power but lots of torque for trails. Last time I checked they went for 1200 to 1500$.. over your budget but 1000$ is not getting you much especially at summer time.
