Unless the Pominville trade becomes official, the Canucks didn't exactly lose ground by staying put. The only significant moves made by any team in the west were made by Columbus and they are a fringe team that will go toe-to-toe with Edmonton for the final playoff spot.

Gotta think that GMMG blew it here. While teams around us were getting better, we added Derek Roy which is good, but not enough. Even if somehow, we managed to make it to the SCF and met the Pens, Boston, even Montreal, I don't think we would win.
Canucks always get "close" with players, but can never seem to seal the deal. Doan, Clowe, Torres off the top of my head.
