Translink Ticket, Need help

I'm not sure if this is the right forum but a friend of mine got ticketed today and he was wondering if he could dispute it.

He graduated from highschool but still uses concession bus pass and was ticketed because the go card was expired?

Is there anyway to dispute it, and if so how?

Thanks

Now, I'm no Gregor Robertson and I don't know much about transit law, but I'm pretty sure expired means expired.

From what i know, once you graduate from highschool you can technically still use the concession pass until youre 18years old. I did that throughout the summer after in graduated and never had a problem with the transit police.

I'm pretty sure that isn't a thing. My friend got ticketed even though he provided his CareCare but the ticketing officer though it was not enough proof even though it displayed his birthdate very clearly and it was his first time.

Single Fares

Concession Fares

Concession fares apply to children 5 to 13 years old, secondary students ages 14 to 19 with a valid GoCard

Your Friend
1. Not a secondary student anymore, Graduated
2. Without valid GoCard, Expired

In sum, you can try to dispute.

If police shows, your friend going to lose the case

he could, or he could just pay the ticket. tbh, what a waste of time when you know you did something wrong. time wasting because he couldnt pay for bus fare?

Or just not pay it because transit tickets are a joke and can't be enforced! oO

^I thought they were from the VPD? And you have to pay them when u renew your drivers license anyways.

I would tell your friend to dispute it, come up with some BS excuse and admit you were wrong.

They usually do lower the fine, my buddy was ticketed for failure to display pass, he went and admitted fault and said he forgot his pass that day and they lowered the fine from $174 to $30

if you're wrong, then you're wrong .. no exceptions

admit to fault and own up to your mistakes, might result in leniency

if you have outstanding transit fines, you won't be able to renew or get new insurance or renew your license (not sure about this one) until you pay it

The new law that was put out couple of months states that if a person has outstanding transit fines they will not get car insurance, or drivers license. Don't recall the Bill that was passed but google it .

First of all, all fare dodger knows they are at fault before they board on skytrain, they just hope to get away from it. Now they got a ticket, still trying to get away with out paying by dispute it.

The best way like some people said above, dispute it, if cop shows, then just admit you were wrong said like you had to finish the concession pass or else it will go to a waste or something. Tell them it will not happen again, and hope to lower the fine fee as your friend are still going to College/University, the tuition is high (if he is going post secondary)...

I hate fare dodgers. I always pay my fares on the few times I use transit. If only Translkink were smart enough to enforce their tickets, then maybe we wouldn't constantly be asked to pay more for gas or whatever else Translink can tax us on, even when we don't use transit.

I think the bill has passed, if not, it should pass.

If a person can afford driving / gas, The person should be able to pay for transit fares.

If you dodge bus fares, and you drive a car, its like you go to gas station, fill up without paying.

Same with parking tickets, you know you'll get fine, but people still risk it (like transit fare dodger, hope they won't run into transit police). But if you ended up getting a ticket, you have to pay for it. However, if you got a parking ticket, for unfair reason (total BS), like not property display ticket when it is clearly on dash. Then ICBC should have systems for that

If I was the premier, I would make the disputing process a challenge.

Dispute the ticket BUT should you lose (cop shows up) it will be double the fine. Double or nothing.
That will clear up the court system before someone can say the word dispute!

Now-a-days people dispute for the hell of it - even if they are at fault. I'll dispute and see what happens is the attitude...

Might be an unnecessary bump but don't GoCards "expire" on October 31? That's what it said on mine anyways.

perhaps OP's buddy lost his gocard from his last year and tried to show an older one ? thus it was expired.

Either way, Doesn't matter.

You need PROOF ON HAND when u get on transit, fare or not.

Not the cops' responsibility to make sure you have your shit together.

There IS no dispute. Because your buddy doesn't have any evidence to back him/herself up.

Pay up

If he had graduated from highschool, it wouldn't matter. Also, the expiry until October is to cover students until they get their student ID photos taken at the beginning of the year, which they don't usually get until October. Once you've graduated (October or not), you can't use consession anymore.
