Removing ABS legality?

A friend of mine and I were having a conversation about removing ABS, and I was wondering if anyone knows the real answer? I've had no luck finding anything on ICBCs website.

His argument was that as long as a model of the car was available without it, that you can remove it (ie if you have a Corolla Limited with ABS, but a Corolla Base Model didn't have it, it would be ok).

My understanding was that it's part of the safety system (like the airbags), and if you remove it you would be fully liable in the case of an accident.

Nothing in the MV Act or Regs that I'm aware of that would prohibit the removal. Common sense and the possibility of civil liability claims in the event of a crash where ABS could have prevented it or lessened the severity, would be a major concern for me.

In other words: it's not illegal, but it is pretty stupid.

The first question you should ask yourself is "why am I removing ABS anyway?"

My ABS on my car has helped me so much, better safe then sorry right? I probably would have rear ended someone by now if it wasn't for the ABS.

I love it when my ABS kicks in and increases my stopping distances in the snow.

I've driven cars without ABS for 10 years and in my opinion, I couldn't wait to get a car with it equipped! Especially in rainy Vancouver, you are not skilled enough to not lock up in a panic situation!

Haha so true, I used to be one of those non-ABS drivers, now that I have ABS the only reason I think someone would drive around on the street without one is to say that they're "too good for ABS," tell that to the adjuster when the next time a c lai cuts you off and slams on her brakes in the rain.

Yeah, I never had ABS until I got a 2001 Accord back in 2002. Probably saved me a few times, although in my Civic, I was able to remember to let go and step on the brake again when I was sliding without ABS. However, I would rather have it now that I've driven with it.

Me too.

It's very entertianing to watch people get red light camera tickets because their ABS was pulsing away and they couldn't stop in time, despite doing all of 30kph.
