do you mean cursive? Shit I would probably bet that was phased out shortly after i finished elementary school

From what I hear, spelling tests are a thing of the past since many teachers believe word processors will just have auto-correct...that's kind of sad IMO

side note..i wonder if kids still get scholastic flyers

funny I was just talking to a coworker about this topic today! In all honesty, I think Humans have always longed for a constant communication but was limited to the technology of that era. I'd say currently with the advent of smartphones, we're all guilty of using them!

I can see where your going with this. Can you imagine growing up with pencils and erasers and have your 10 yr old kid asking you for a $1500 macbook? Yes we are in a different age now and its common for kids that young to have a mac in a rich family. Theres a difference between spoiling kids and having them to grow up similar to most of us who learned to appreciate things.

if the point of school is to prepare you for work life then why not get them started early using technology? I know it's a shock to some of us who grew up using pencils and paper but companies are all depending on technology and our kids better be prepared to use it well in the real world.

IMO the education system has gotten lazy over the past couple generations. I dont see much difference between hockey and teaching now. You got the government bein cheap greedy and wasteful and the teachers bein greedy lazy and wasteful too. Just like hockey.
When I went to school you knew basic math before you were allowed to use a basic calculator ( I had to teach my kid as well as others the times tables chart cus the teacher didnt know it!). When I went to school you had to pay attention no matter how bad the teacher stunk (thats one thing that hasnt changed teachers still dont wear deodorant lol) now I get texts from class from my daughter. I ask her teachers why this is tolerable and the answer I get it keeps them from bothering the other students (THATS THE TEACHERS FUCKIN JOB NOT BBM!!). Give'm Ritalin and other dangerous drugs to make them easier to cope with and then stick them infront of a computer and make gym optional. Lazy sad state of affairs and a slippery slope we are playing on whats more sad is how many parents dont take the time to involve themselves and go along with this behavior.

Without technology there wouldn't be so many advances. But I do think that as generations grow, we are losing all sight of the basics.

Kids don't learn the necessities in life, and they grow up to be more screwed up then the prior generation.

I will kindly just sit back and wait for a EMP to hit, and all technology to be destroyed.
Our would with no power = Massive chaos.

Elementary schools still have bookfairs.

I remember winning a board game from the bookfair contest while i was in elementary school. It was Scrabble i believe.

I was for a week. Never played with it though

I forgot which private school it was, but there is one in Van that requires all students have an iPad, iPhone, and iMac to even be enrolled. I'm curious as to why the school system favours the use of apple products as well because of the other less expensive alternatives available.

I'd be more worried about the technology they use in the free time, rather than technology used to school work in a private school.

Kids nowadays are so attatched to electronics, they don't even play sports or engage in alot of physical activity during recess and lunch and gym, whatever it may be. I'm actually going to pay my old school a visit to see how the kids are there. if they're using tech to do work who cares?

hahaha, just before summer i was called to check a water leak problem at an elementary school in burnaby, just so happens when i was at the office i noticed a teacher there that i had when i was in grade 4...she knew exactly who i was still...took me to her class and on her bulletin board wall, she had a photo of me on it still...from the mid 90's...pointed to her class saying "this is the boy in the photo!!!" hahaha felt kinda weird standing infront of 30 9-10 year olds staring at me with their jaws open lol

back in her class for an art project that lasted several months, she had taugh the class how to knit and crochet and sew, i ended up knitting a blanket that was about 8 feet wide and 4.5 feet high, in a million different colors.....she still teaches kids how to actually do things that could be usefull outside of school that doesnt involve electronic use...that lady deserves a teachers award lol
