| Digital Thermostat for Baseboard Heaters?
Hi I was wondering if you could do a swap from the dial to a digital one? I have a really new townhouse and all the rooms have the dial thermostat. The electrician who worked on the complex says I cannot.

i swapped the analog one that's in my house to digital. my analog one just uses mercury and i believe a potentiometer. uses 2 low voltage wires so it was compatible with the digital stat which takes a bunch of AA's i think. my house uses forced air heating. what does your townhouse use?

You can pick up digital t-stats for BBH, just make sure it's the right voltage.
I don't see why your electrician says that you can't.
If you do change them, maybe turn off the breaker first just incase.

The digital thermostat will need a power feed to it even if the thermostat is off. Take the one you have off the wall and see if there are more then two cables in the junction box. If so then I believe it is possible for a digital unit to be wired in... or you can possibly find a battery powered unit.
Just make sure that you use the appropriate voltage rated thermostat.

If there is a single 2 wire in the junction box you can connect a 2 wire thermostat. (non-polarized line, load)
If there is more than one 2 wire in the junction box you can connect either a 2 wire (non-polarized line, load) or 4 wire thermostat. (polarized line 1, line 2, load 1, load 2)
Its most likely that there would be more than one 2 wire in the JB, so you're fine.
Lots of brands make them. Aube, Honeywell, etc.

I found some Hydro-Sil digital 'stats at Princess Auto a while back, $20 each... programmable too, different temp settings for day, night, and vacation, with four time periods per day (so for example, I have them come on at 21 degrees at 6am, then go to 17 degrees at 8am, then back to 21 from 5-10pm, and back to 17 overnight).
Works fine with my two-wire baseboards - they wire right in place of the old dial 'stats, just disconnect the old one and connect the new one.

Bringing back a old thread. I have the same issue with the dialed baseboard heating and want to switch to something more modern. Anyone have any recommendations of which product to use and someone to install them??

Cost will vary depending on how complex you want the programming to be, and whether you want it to be network-capable and such.
