I've always had this admiration for certain qualities of the different races, chinese people I've known in life seemed to have this strong, silent determination that I've been learning to emulate. Imagine the mental strength you'd need to look out your window, see the road, see your neighbors gone, and be like, "I made the right choice."

Wow.

melloman 11-22-2012 11:51 AM

^^ Sure. Until they ever try to leave that place in the middle of a highway and get NOTHING for it.

IMHO there are times when that tenacity will pay off, and other times (like the house in the highway) where if the government doesn't pay them out (which by looks they won't) they don't get a dime for anything.

Id use the hwy as my own personal drag strip... Would make a good track/autox course at night.. LOL

My god, some of the decisions made by the Chinese government really boggle my mind. They really don't respect their citizens. They are notorious for forcing people out of old buildings without proper compensation, if the family was paid a fair price I'm sure they would have moved, but instead they get low balled and screwed over by their own government.

When I was living in Kunming, I had a bunch of locals approach me on the street, they asked me to take pictures and help them because the government was demolishing their apartment building to make room for a new luxury tower. The compensation offered wasn't even close to enough to buy a new home, so these people really didn't know how they were going to live. It was so sad for me to hear their story..unfortunately as a foreigner there was really little I could do for risk of being kicked out of the country(government really doesn't take kindly to foreigners sticking their noses in their business..or even local citizens for that matter).

i have always both admired and facepalmed at older generations of chinese people (actualy older generations in general) for being on that fine line between amazing discipline/valuing of tradition and plain stubbornness

So no one that was paving that road thought "Hey wait, this isnt right. Maybe we should tell someone" :fulloffuck:

rocksforsale 12-05-2012 10:21 PM

i bet it costed more for the gov't to pave around the house than to just add enough dough to convince the couple to move; and now its gonna cost more to demolish and rebuild the road... this is what happens when they stay hard-headed

Ulic Qel-Droma 12-05-2012 10:40 PM

It was likely a case of Hydro Quebec and Bell dragging their asses on moving their lines and the paving contractor getting fed up with the delays and saying "Fuck it, lets just do the fucking job and let them sort it out".

murd0c 12-06-2012 06:39 AM

You can't explain why the actual French people in Quebec do things. You just have to shake your head sometimes.

That's because this guy influences the transportation infrastructure here in QC.
