Mayor calls for middle lane of Lions Gate bridge to be closed at night Mayor calls for overnight closure of Lions Gate middle lane - British Columbia - CBC News Instantly what comes to mind is: If they close the middle lane, it will become an illegal passing lane. Why? Simple... if someone is stuck behind someone doing 60 kph, it's clear, and it's 3 AM, and the middle lane is closed, people will pass. I know I would, but I would do it on the long descending/ascending slope into West Van, and not the blind-corner forested park of the causeway. Trouble is, 20 year old men aren't that smart, and some cocky ballsy dude with something to prove will pass at the forested part, and there will be at least a couple head-on crashes I bet |
better an illegal passing lane than illegally passing into oncoming? |

Is that how the accident happened? |
Ugh... knee jerk reactions from local politicians again... |
I hope he isn't simply pandering to the emotions of the masses like a demagogue and has a solid rational argument. |
Eventually he will turn it into a bike lane... |
Lions Gate is wide as heck. It's not like Patullo, which actually benefits from night lane closure. Kneejerk reaction is right. |
The issue here is... "logic" Just like what is coming from the actual accident thread, everyone is talking about "human logic" which IMHO doesn't really exist anymore. Common sense has left the building, and sometimes people need to jump to conclusions for humanities stupidity. They have always said that LGB was a death trap just because these head-on collisions are so easily possible, thus the ideas of a new bridge yet they aren't plausible because of the available real estate on Stanley Park side. IMHO, shut down the middle lane at night. Get someone to monitor the traffic cameras during this period to catch any of these "illegal passers" because hey.. If your going to pass, who says that someone going the opposite direction might try it to.. and then there's major fatalities because 2 idiots tried to do the same thing at the same time. |
