should i run 3 snow tires or 2 snows and 2 all seasons?

Just happened to buy a set of new snow tires, parked in front of my friend's house, and some asshole slashes one of my tires and the shop will not replace my tire because it was slashed...now, is it safer to use the 3 snows I have available and use some garbage all seasonal tire the garage gave me or use two of my achilles atr sport tires on the rear?

Next time, park it in your batcave and this wouldn't have happened.

But on the serious side.....since your set of snow tires are new. I would just purchase a new single tire and see if the tire shop will give you a slight discount. It sucks that you have to be forking out another tire's cost....but that's life. And your other 3 tires are still relatively new....so if you purchase a 4th tire now, they will still wear evenly.

Which shop is this lol - most places will try to give you a break and give you a discount.
Why did they only slash 1 tire and not all 4?

Buy the 4th tire.

If you have coverage, ICBC will replace the tire.

For the sake of argument, I would think 2 winter and 2 all-seasons would be better than 3 winter and 1 crap tire. The handling would not be ideal, but at least it would be consistent.

if buying an extra same tire is not an option, then drive on two of each, with the snow tires in the rear.

most shops will not give you an option of buying one tire, they will only sell in sets of two. Go to a few shops and see if they have any tires to match the ones you have or check on Craigslist.

No. Then you will have more grip in the front compared to the rear and you run the risk of spinning out.

And if your car is AWD please don't mix match. You'll blow a diff with different grip on the non-snow tire

shouldn't it be, snows on the front and my all seasons in the back? I am not even sure how good my all seasons are in snow, although they are awesome in the wet. I have Achilles ATR sport tires and the tread pattern looks like it is made for summer but websites and reviews say all seasonal.

Buying a new one is not optional because Continental of Europe does not ship the model of my snows here anymore and the pair i purchased was the last one. These are superb snow tires and they are difficult to find. Tires were purchased from "Ed the tire guy" in Surrey.

ideally, you should be running 4 snow tires if it is bad out.
The problem with 2 snows plus 2 all seasons is that you have mismatched levels of grip on your car. If you run the snows up front and all weathers in the rear, then you run the risk of the back end sliding out in the snow.
If you have the snow tires on the back, then you will end up understeering.

That being said, I've run snows in the front and all season in the rear of a fwd car and if you drive slowly and safely, you'll never notice the back end sliding out. But if you take a turn a little quickly or brake hard enough to engage the ABS, you will feel the back end being a tad loose.

I think it was 5 years ago where a person had snows on the front and all season on the rear of his Civic, he lost control and crashed his car and ICBC determined that him having snows on the front and all seasons on the rear was a contributing factor to his accident.

Obviously have the two winter tires on the passenger side, and the two all seasons on the driver side. Everyone knows that. Due to the weight of the car being heavier on the driver side with your weight and the weight of the steering column, you won't need good tires on that side, just on the lighter passenger side.
