Red Light camera out of country citation

I found you guys doing a google search for Vancouver red light cameras and stumbled upon this forum. I couldn't find any real answers or information from the ICBC website but I was hoping you guys can answer it.

The red light camera flashed when I ran through the intersection of Knight and 49th tonight. From what I read from the other postings about red lights, the cameras get rotated throughout the city and they run on traditional film, which someone has to pull out. It's a bit different were I'm from, since all the shots are taken digitally and processed pretty quickly.

The question I have is that will I get a citation if my car is from the states? I came by Vancouver to visit with a rental car and ran through the red light with it flashing once when I crossed it.

I didn't want to suddenly brake because the road was wet, so I decided to just go through it, hoping I can make it before the red light but it was already too late.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The red light cameras in BC are now digital. They upgraded them a year or two ago. However not all cameras will generate actual tickets at the same time. They pick and choose.

It depends if ICBC has an agreement with whatever state your rental car is registered in to share information. If yes, then what will happen is the ticket will be sent to your rental agency who will bill your credit card.

Thanks so much for the clarification, so I just have to wait and see what happens I suppose. Is there any way to find out if the ICBC has an agreement with my state?

You can email them and ask. That's probably your best bet.

You can also contact the Integrated Traffic Camera Unit by phone at 1-800-772-8120, they're open 8:30am-4pm. When the transition to digital cameras was made, ICBC gained the ability to retrieve and process the information immediately following the event; they should be able to confirm whether a fine will be levied tomorrow.

I hope you enjoyed your visit to Vancouver.

I called up the Integrated Traffic Camera Unit and they said that I will get a citation and it doesn't matter what state you reside in the US. The fee is $167 and there is a $25 discount if you pay within 30 days of the notice. There will be NO points on my DMV record and it's just basically a fee you pay when you run the red light.

For my instance, I don't know if the rental company will take that $25 off when they charge me. I know they will bill me for some administration fee + citation but not sure about the discount for early payment.

If ICBC sends the ticket to the rental agency, and the agency pays within 30 days they will only be charged the $142, so they probably won't be able to scam you out of it.

You weren't too clear on this, but if they didn't confirm you are being fined then sit a while and see, I've had cameras flash on me and have not received tickets for them. Happened a few times actually.

If they did confirm it, get them to e-mail or fax you a copy of the citation so you have the amount on record.

Just curious, did they ask for any information like your date/time, state and your license plate? Did they actually look up your file? Or maybe they are just saying that because that's what they want people to think.

Dear OP,

Please drive slower than the speed limit in the rain as to ensure you can stop in time for red lights.

Thank you,
Canada.

it all depends on if they take the effort to send the citation to the rental company. if you almost made the light, and they determine wet conditions etc etc. they may just let it pass

According to the OP, the road was wet and this happened at night. He ran the light because he didn't want to "suddenly brake". This leads me to believe he was going to fast to stop in time for the conditions.

to the OP: Did you enter on the red or you just weren't able to clear the intersection before it turned red? You only get a ticket if they have a picture of you entering the intersection AND leaving the intersection when it's red. So, if you entered on an amber light and the light turned red after you entered, then you should be find. But, if it was already red before you entered the intersection, then you may get ticketed.

Nah, I didn't provide them anything. I just asked a general question and that's probably their general response to the inquiry. I'll just have to wait and see if I get charged with my CC from the rental company for the citation.

I already saw it red before I went in the intersection. I was going too fast and decided to go through it instead of slamming the brakes to try to stop by the line.
