Went to https://twitter.com/Cmdr_Hadfield - listed his followers at 84,098. Refreshed about 4 minutes later, it was at 85,140. Dude's getting himself very popular, very fast.

I'm not surprised at all, hes funny and the pics he's taking of our planet are breath taking. Everyone has always wanted to go to space and him on twitter is kinda like being there.

That guy is awesome.

Blows my mind that we can talk to a dude in space without being at mission control. Amazing.

He spent his entire life in Ontario, born and raised. So I don't mind him being a Leafs fan, I just feel sorry for him

He did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit right before he went up to the ISS. It's actually pretty amazing, reading some of his responses. He comes off as a very, VERY intelligent man - strong leader - just the type of person you would want commanding the ISS.

I read some pretty funny responses to his comments though.

Somebody asked him this,

Quote:
Did spaceflight change religious view?

No one gets to be an astronaut without a strong personal conviction that gives them strength and confidence. No matter what religion or creed they believe in, all astronauts have something fundamental within themselves that they can draw upon. The actual experience of space travel in fact deepens this, reinforces it, and accentuates the awe and wonder that are at the base of it.
Then somebody else asked him this,

Quote:

Being from Sarnia do you cheer for the Leafs, the Red Wings, or someone else?

The Leafs.
Then somebody else commented

Quote:

The Leafs

This is the strong personal conviction he was talking about. Lesser humans would crumble and move on.
For those interested in reading the AMA, here is the link

I Am Astronaut Chris Hadfield, Commander of Expedition 35. : IAmA

One of my favorite answers of his:

Quote:
If you could bring one famous person into space with you, who would it be?

One non-famous person?

[–]ColChrisHadfield[S] 379 points 24 days ago

Assuming I already had a competent crew, so that I wasn't counting on this person to operate the vehicle and keep us alive, I would bring an extremely talented artist. One who could capture the experience in a way it had never been captured before.

That may be a songwriter (such as Stan Rogers, if he were still alive) who could put a profession -- a way of life -- into perspective.
I thought that was a really well thought out answer. He actually recorded a song for Christmas, live on the ISS, and posted it on youtube and songcloud.

Seriously getting a little emotional reading his responses

This must be what it feels like to be religious, to look up to someone so much

Difference being, this is a real person, doing real things for humanity

LindsayLohan: Having lunch at Spago's today with (drop name here). Hey Paris!
ParisHilton: Just relaxin' Linz, spending the day tanning on the yacht. What's up Chris?
ChrisHadfield: Not doing much, just TWEETIN' FROM FUCKIN' SPACE!

Thinking about all the useless personal updates people send out this is very refreshing.

Just reading that makes me - he doesn't want to bring someone along for his own enjoyment and benefit, but someone who can then add new dimension to the whole experience for everyone else's benefit.
