The New World Record, Henessey Venum GT: 0-300km/h in 13.63 seconds

Hennessey Venom GT Hits 186 MPH In 13.63 Seconds, New World Record
BY NELSON IRESON
Jan 10, 2013

If you thought the Hennessey Venom GT was anything other than world-smashingly fast, you just haven't been paying attention. Now, however, it holds the title of world's quickest--to 186 mph, at least.

The specific details of the feat, accomplished today, will be forthcoming in an episode of Drive two weeks from now, but we do know that the Guinness Book of World Records was on hand to certify the blazing run along an airstrip in Texas.

It took the Venom GT just 13.63 seconds to hit 300 kilometers per hour, or 186.411 mph.

No matter how you slice it, that's quick.

But, get this: the mental mechanical masterminds at Hennessey are planning an even nuttier version for 2014, with 1,500 horsepower on tap.

For those of you who haven't been following along, the Venom GT is a lengthened Lotus Exige with an LS9 wedged into it.

I remember when the Venom first came out and they were hyping all sorts of numbers.

Then you go to their website and check the gallery if the actual test cars and what do you find....

there's no catalytic converters.

How can something be verified as a record breaker if its not emissions (and therefore street) legal? Waiting for the video and hoping it has some clear engine bay pics.

I see where he's coming from with that.

If a car isn't built with cats, it's a race car. You might as well be talking about a drag car doing a quick 0-300 pull, and that's not impressive for a drag car.

To answer your question they were all early 80's. Except for my Cummins which is an 02 but the GVW's been raised.

Or what about if you live anywhere in BC that isn't the Lower Mainland...

Every vehicle sold in north america since the mid 70s has come with a factory installed cat so I don't know where you're getting that from. Lower mainland or not.

It's still illegal to remove a cat elsewhere, they just don't check for it.

Well, umm, you're wrong. I'll go dig out my aircare papers and take a pic of where it says "catalytic converter - N/A"

I've had an 81, 82, 83, and 84 Volvo and none of them had cats on em and they all had factory exhaust systems.

Weird, apparently they were only mandatory in the states in 75, canada they granted exceptions, but your car seems to be a rarity. It was available with or without a cat from 82-84. My 83 Brat had a factory converter, so did my 79 Trans Am.

Well, we don't know. I have a feeling it will be called a production car because it happens to meet the bare minimum requirements of a specific state in the US (maybe similar to a kit car or limited edition which allows it to bypass certain regulations).

Regardless, they still love to compare it to the Veyron (as they also did with their Viper in an acceleration test a few years back, another car running without cats). The Veyron runs full cats and is legal all over the world. IMO all these companies are cheating because their cars are only street legal because of some loophole that exists in a very limited market.

Anyone who races knows that cars are put into classes based on things like engine displacement and horsepower. If I race a stock BMW 3 Series and another guy shows up with the same car, but has a turbocharger system, is it fair to let him race in my class? Of course not - he'd be bumped up into a higher class because of the modifications he's done.

This is exactly what these companies are doing - cheating. Running their cars by a different set of rules and comparing them to cars which are following the rules (being emissions legal all over the world).

That doesn't mean a car can come of the production line without them.

If you'll read his latest post, that's exactly his point. Some states.

It may technically be a street legal production car, but you can't bring it wherever you want. Buy a Veyron in the States and bring it up here, sure. Just make sure the lights work and we're cool. Buy one in Europe and take it to the States? No problem!

But since this thing is custom, it won't be legal in all jurisdictions everywhere. It may qualify as a street legal* car, instead.

*where street legal refers to its ability to drive on a temporary permit in select States between track-racing events. Ask your dealer for more information, or look for the brochure on our website.
