As a man of colour it certainly warmed my heart to watch the inaguration of Barack Obama. To know that we have overcome so much and been through so much as a people strengthens my resolve in my life to simply "do better".
As inspirational as seeing him elected (and later re-elected), today I find a new source of inspiration. The return of bcrdukes is, as I'm sure Dr. Martin Luther King would have agreed, a far more important occasion. I will borrow his words to express my feelings on the matter:

We have overcome. Deep in my heart I believe we have overcome.
Sometimes we've had tears in our eyes when we joined together to sing it, but we still decided to sing it! We have overcome.
Lord, before this victory was won some had to get points.
The victory is won, and some of us had our accounts suspended.
Though the victory is won, even some had to face getting our accounts banned. But if bans are the price that some must pay, to free our brother Dukes from a permanent ban, then nothing shall be more redemptive. We shall over come.
There is the question of our attitudes toward the moderators. Some say overzealous moderation is to blame. I disagree. Ghandi did not blame the British people for the problems in India 100 years ago. I have noticed that there is hatred towards the moderators among the people. The people say they are disgusted with their behavior. The people make no distinction between moderator action and the moderators as people. To them, the two are one. This hatred would even make them welcome unmoderated anarchy. It is most dangerous. We must get rid of this feeling. We must come together.
Chairman Mao said that all the reputedly powerful reactionaries are merely paper tigers. The reason is that they are divorced from the people. Look! Was not Hitler a paper tiger? Was Hitler not overthrown? He also said that the tsar of Russia, the emperor of China and Japanese imperialism were all paper tigers. As we know, they were all overthrown. Moderators have not yet been overthrown and they have the banhammer. He would believe moderators could also be overthrown but that is not the discussion here. Moderators are not tools of oppression.
So even though we face the difficulties of moderators and members I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the Revscene dream.
I have a dream that our members will one day log on to a forum where they will not be judged by the mistakes in their spelling but by the content of their posts.
I have a dream that the context of our posts, and not specific words within them will determine if we get banned or not.
I have a dream that when this happens, when we allow good citizenship to ring, when we let it ring from every forum and subforum, from every thread and every post, we will be able to speed up that day when all of us, black men and yellow men, dippers and persians, gwailo and the rest of them, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty, we're free at last!"
She taught me right from wrong and always told me to stay positive and help others no matter how small the deed - that helping others gives us meaning to carry on. The sun is out today and it's a new day. Life is good. I just needed a slap in the face.
