| "Teen girls arrested in B.C. SkyTrain stabbings" Quote:
Two teenage girls arrested late Monday night for allegedly attacking people with a knife on and around the SkyTrain transit line are well known to authorities, Transit police in Metro Vancouver say.
Since January 2012, police have come in contact with the pair, aged 14 and 15, 142 times, Const. Anne Drennan said Tuesday. Many of the run-ins have been with transit police.
"They have been a problem for quite some time. They have been arrested numerous times and are released on conditions, very often breaching those conditions and re-arrested. It's kind of a revolving door scenario," Drennan said.
"They are a serious, ongoing problem."
The latest incident began Monday night at about 11:30 p.m. PT across the street from the Gateway SkyTrain station in Surrey when two girls appeared to be looking for a fight.
One of the girls allegedly slashed a woman on the arm with a knife. They then boarded the SkyTrain and allegedly confronted another woman and slashed one of the seats.
The terrified woman then got off the train at New Westminster's Columbia Station where she was allegedly chased by the girls and punched in the face.
Then at Joyce Station the suspects allegedly attacked a man, who used a pizza box to defend himself.
The suspects fled the area, but were arrested shortly afterwards by transit police.
Drennan said at least two people were stabbed with a 20-centimetre steak knife during the attacks, but no one received serious injuries.
"The woman who was slashed on the arm received a cut several inches long, which required stitches," Drennan said. "The man who was holding the pizza box — the box was stabbed but fortunately he wasn't, although he did receive a small cut to his finger. And the woman who was punched received cuts and scrapes to her face."
Transit police have recommended charges of assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and possession of a dangerous weapon, Drennan said.

Came into contact 142 times, arrested numerous times AND released on conditions... I guess the police were waiting to see someone die before getting more serious with these two. I hope they don't get released again on "conditions" |

"Well known to authorities".
I'm not sure if I want to be angry or disappointed or...what. I mean, seriously. Where are the fucking parents that they can be "well known to authorities" just after leaving fucking Elementary!

These girls are beyond fixing. Parenting fail for sure, but it's too late. They need psychiatric help. Perhaps Reactive Attachment Disorder (children with no conscience). They will lead a life of crime and misery and most likely end up dead from foul play or suicide. Let's hope they don't have children.

There are two problems at play from what I can see:
The facts: these girls are out of control, to the point of having contact with police 142 times. Assuming that(hopefully) previous 'interventions' did not involve full on assault.
1) No one fucking cares. You are telling me that you are looking at a 14 year old and writing her off? I get it, sometimes someone is just too far gone...but a 14 and 15 year old? No. You didn't want to make the phone call. Someone didn't think the paperwork was worth the hassle.
2) Laws that allow for a revolving system. They are minors, on a path to increasing crime. It's the minors part that puts them back in the hands of their parents to deal with...who obviously do not give a shit.
A couple of years ago, tenants had a drunken party at our building(our last drunken party I'll add. Yay us) anyway, this chick got kicked out, so came to the front door and started pounding it and kicking it, and broke the glass.
That's when I got the call, and we went to find what was happening. I walk onto the second floor and find the party attendees hauling her out of the apartment. Cops called, and they show up. Little chickadee gets cuffed.
....aaaaaannnnndddd nothing.
No one physically saw her break the door(a $500 repair), the police said she has a record the length of their arm, well known to police, we can see blood on her leg(as her foot went through plate glass) but because there wasn't a person standing there watching this dipshit nail the door...she goes to the drunk tank to sleep it off, then home.
I understand why this happens with the protections of our legal system(to do oherwise would be a police state) but its so frustrating.
I mean, its even worse, as the tenant lost the apartment over it and had to pay for the damage...which I don't feel slightly bad about, but all because no one intervened with this girl when she was first getting started.

It's quite evident where the justice system's priorities lay. These girls get released time and time again; meanwhile there are mandatory minimum sentences for smoking a joint to attract the Helen Lovejoy vote. The result-overcrowded prisons and backlogged courtrooms, further contributing to a revolving door system as Gridlock said. It's a travesty.

You're bound to have these types of people who slip through the cracks. Is it worth changing the legal system over? Probably not because if you change how minors are treated, there will likely be unintended consequences that will screw over a lot of kids we do want to save and who do have the ability to be productive members of society.
At the end of the day, there are just some people who are unfit to be parents. Like MG1, I believe that the laws of nature will get these girls eventually. Posted via RS Mobile |

In the US for example a young offender will have their trial televised and their name plastered all over the media. Guilty until proven innocent. I've seen newspaper articles about 18 year olds being charged with statutory rape because they had sex with their 17 year old girlfriend. Or child porn charges over sexting. It can fuck up their lives for good.

these children should be seperated from their parents and her other friend and put in foster homes away from this city. theres no gurantee that moving them away from each other and putting them in a foster home will help...but maybe it will at least give them the parental attention they need? let a capable adult whip them into shape..
that or just have vancouvers own version of "beyond scared straight", but make it more than just a 1 day visit..let them sleep in there a few nights without having a cameraman on them 24/7, give them a taste of whats in their future.

| That would mean we would have to invest money which is a novel idea... In a context of people calling for reduced spending.

These girls are an unfortunate case, but usually the laws are written in such a way as to ensure that fundamental principles are maintained. Also, if you change the laws to make them more punitive to minors, there could be unintended consequences. An example of a law that looked good on paper, but is lousy in practice is that 3-strikes law in California and other States. Posted via RS Mobile |
