I do my part to reduce energy consumption and waste on a daily basis. I'm not opposed to others participating in this 'event', but I think the point about eco/enviro/etc - awareness was already made with the first Earth Hour.

RRxtar 03-23-2013 11:57 AM

for every lightbulb that gets turned off tonite, china is dumping a million barrels of toxic who knows what into the river laughing at stupid white man.

hell, even seeing what happens in northern alberta will make you question your own recycling concerns.

shawnly1000 03-23-2013 12:10 PM

RS will have a spike in traffic from mobile devices during that time lol

Considering that a lot of our power is hydro-electric, turning off lights won't do much at all, since the power didn't come from fuel (coal, oil) being burned.

It's fine to do it as a symbolic gesture, but know that most of our power is earth friendly already.

My house will be dark, my TV off and my monitors black.

Because I'm going to a friend's birthday at a restaurant. Seriously. Fuck Earth Hour.

noventa 03-23-2013 03:28 PM

i'm gonna charge some batteries and then throw them away.

Lomac 03-23-2013 03:38 PM

My house is surrounded by 100' evergreen trees, so even if there's sunlight at the black-out time, I'll be bashing head first into every single thing inside. :lol

Seriously, though, I make sure no extra electricity is being used when it's not needed, and I've gone from V8's and FI'ed V6's to a flat-four. I've introduced numerous recycling programs at work, including styrofoam and plastic. I think I've earned my right to keep my lights on at 8:30 tonight. After all, I need electricity to fap to my internet porn.

:fappery:

Coren 03-23-2013 06:07 PM

maybe i'll turn on all the lights at 829 and then turn them off at 830 to say i'm doing my part.
:fuckthatshit:

Ronin 03-23-2013 07:05 PM

hal0g0dv2 03-23-2013 08:27 PM

:ilied:

SoNaRWaVe 03-23-2013 10:13 PM

i will never fully understand "these kind of days". if one really cared and are passionate about this, they would be engaged in this sort of thing everyday. people are so quick to hop onto these type of bandwagons. one night of an off switch ain't gonna do jack shit unless its everyday err'day.

noventa 03-23-2013 10:23 PM

^yeah but at least it gets people thinking about conserving energy.

People shouldn't be worrying about conserving energy (though it's smart), they should be worrying about creating a clean power grid. Electricity on it's own is 99.9% clean, the environmental impact comes from the different methods used to create it.

Dams, wind farms, and solar arrays, further advances in these technologies would be beneficial. Ditch the dirty energy in exchange for those clean, self sufficient systems, and in turn people can use as much power as they want without harming the environment.

tonyzoomzoom 03-23-2013 10:52 PM

People should be focused on conserving energy and using energy wisely. Conservation is as clean and as green as it gets.

But people are thinking about it the wrong way. I can't tell you how crowded the coffee shops were last year with people on their laptops. I asked the barista of the Starbucks I was in why there were so many people--the answer she'd gotten? "Most of them came out for Earth hour so they could turn off their electricity at home."

...so you charge your devices like crazy before you leave the house, then turn everything off for an hour, leave to go to Starbucks for an hour and use THEIR lights and wifi, then at the end of the hour go back home and talk about the "difference" you made. And then you turn all your lights back on because "you don't like having a dark house", and plug everything in, and turn on the TV so you're not lonely...and life continues to go on wastefully.

In this, just like on pink shirt day, people focus on "spreading the word" and "awareness" as though awareness were a cure. I'm plenty fucking aware of cancer, thank you very much, how about we start spending money on curing it instead of parades that celebrate its existence?
