Jerry Cans illegal to carry in trunk?

So I went to Point Roberts to get gas today. I also took 4 jerrycans to bring back to make the trip worth while. At the border crossing the guard said it's illegal and I could get fined $500. And he said they should be tied down or something. He didn't end up giving me any fines and let me go.

so the question is, whats the legal way to carry jerry cans?

Border guards are not traffic cops or CVSE.. so I think the only thing they can do is to call the cops on you (paper work). or tax you for fuel in the tanks. (extra work)

Chances are the border guard is trying to get a reaction from you to read your facial expression.

Cans should be vented and tied down... simple as that.

I've never had an issue with how my jerry cans are secured but have been told by border guards that I can only bring one jerry can back. Anything more would be taxed AND fined.

Just fill up a plastic garbage bag with gas -- it's much more stable as it'll spread out along the floor of your trunk and there's no law requiring ventilation/tying down of garbage bags containing gas in your trunk

but uhh ... some bungee cords are cheap to keep the jerry can from tipping over and leaking through the vent.

I don't think having the jerry cans in your trunk is the illegal part - as JKam indicates, it's probably an "import" thing, bringing back more than a certain amount of gas that's NOT in your car's tank.

As for the garbage bag idea... For starters, most gas stations will refuse to allow you to fill anything BUT an approved container. Second, what if something punctures the bag? What if there's a pinhole leak somewhere? That is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever seen on RS.

I like you soundy but thinking a garbage bag full of gas was a serious idea is even dumber than filling the bag in the first place. It is clearly sarcasm...
