Good hosting companies not named GoDaddy, preferably Canadian

Hey all.

Anybody running a business website with a Canadian hosting company? I need one for my consulting firm, but I'd prefer a Canadian company, mostly due to privacy laws and Google search results.

Anybody using a Canadian company?

Thanks!

Web Hosting & Domain Names - Doteasy.com
Canadian Web Hosting - Web Hosting Canada all in Canadian dollars - Plus Canada Domain Hosting Services

Mr.C 05-02-2013 11:43 AM

Do you use both of them?

MG1 05-02-2013 11:54 AM

Doteasy is what I've been using. At the very beginning, they were horrible to deal with, as in trying to get a hold of them. They have since gotten better over the years. I've been happy with their service. Based out of Burnaby, I believe.

How is their uptime? I'm not going to be running anything bandwidth-intensive, but 99.9% uptime is a must.

Used Canadian Web Hosting when I was working with a web design company.

Doteasy I'm currently using. Not a lot of experience with their customer service so I can't comment. But I do know that they host for NCIX and quite a few local businesses.

Good to know, thanks. Do they bill in CAD or USD?

Not a Canadian company but I am fantastically happy with Rackspace. They are extremely easy to get ahold of when you need, good product base, nice online control panel, and reasonable prices. I have taken all my business from a combination of Bell, GoDaddy, and Rackspace and consolidated with Rackspace.

Cloud Hosting, Managed Hosting and Colocation Services by PEER 1 Hosting

based out of vancouver.. did use them, now host all our web servers in dmz.

Presto 05-02-2013 02:13 PM

Not Canadian, but it was recommended to me in an RS thread: Stablehost.

I see their banner ad for 50% off, pop-up every so often. Their customer service is quick to respond if you have any questions. They have a very flexible control panel, too.

godwin 05-02-2013 02:22 PM

Well how Canadian do you want? I mean Peer1 is not quite Canadian.

Cloud solution makes privacy laws even messier. Unless your business deals with nefarious things or vices (gambling, porn etc). I won't worry too much about being in Canada or not.

If you have high volume you can go with in2net.. I think ncix runs off them or at least used to.

islandnet

Company is based in vancouver island. The biggest downtime i had was when someone accidentally cut the fibre to the building. lasted about a day but other than that no trouble at all

There's no real reason to have hosting in Canada, unless you are doing something that is illegal in other countries

Google/Bing search results prioritize a Canadian DNS for local results, or so I've heard.

SkinnyPupp 05-04-2013 07:36 PM

The might prioritize on domain name, but I doubt they would on IP address. Because most sites use a CDN anyway, so the ip for the site itself is meaningless.

Shaw also can host and support is local as well. not sure about price however.

I checked them; they are ridiculously expensive.

I'll probably get a year at an American host and see how it goes.

SkinnyPupp 05-05-2013 07:03 PM

HostGator is cheap and fast for basic needs (IE just a single site)
