Video Review: FRS vs RX8 vs S2000

I love all three of these cars. The result isn't that surprising.

I agree totally, for sporty driving I will take the S2000 any day of the week over the FR-S. BUT I don't like convertibles and having 2 arguably useless seat does have some advantage to me.

If S2000 was a coupe then its perfect

The only thing that is appealing about the RX-8 to me is the practicality of four doors and two rear seats that can actually fit full-sized adults in the back very comfortably. Otherwise, as great as rotary engines perform, they're too much trouble to deal with. Plus the RX-8 chugs premium gas and oil like there's no tomorrow. However, there's no doubt it's a great car with excellent handling characteristics. Can pick one up in great condition for relatively cheap, and they look great too!

So it comes down to S2000 or FR-S/BRZ.

S2000 > FR-S/BRZ

I guess I'll only be able to play hockey on sunny days then

I lol'd my ass off at 6:54 partly because of the way he chose his words, partly because what he said is totally true.

when it comes down to performance and driver enjoyment i completely agree with them, but one of the things toyota/subaru was advertising and keying in on was the frs' ability to load 4 wheels for track day much like the 86's ability to load tofu for midnight runs. it would be nice to purchase a car purely on how much you enjoy the drive, but many people need to take in account their life style. personally ive been waiting for someone who owns an ap1 to sell it cheap to me when or if they switch to an frs/brz

.
.
.
.

been back and forward a lot deciding if i wanted to move up to the frs though but there's one thing it cant do

Thanks for the cool review!

I wish Honda had an updated version of the S2000 for sale, it would be my first choice for a weekend car. But alas the BRZ will most likely be my next car.

RX8 was a pretty nice car.... aside from that motor..

chassis was exceptional for a stock car.. and mine was just a base model!

chugged lots of gas, didnt feel fast... and questionable reliability.. they go through coil packs and that results in flooding if the they coil packs dont ignite properly. coil packs and wires run up to 1k!

would have been cool if the S2000 was a coupe...

you know what... watching this review brings a tear to my eye, lol, somewhat unrelated but... I feel like I had a chance to get a kick ass deal on a AP1 that my friend was selling and now the opportunity is gone. I am a father and a 2 seater roadster just doesnt fit into my life style anymore.

I DD a 240SX with the back seats still in, and a 2012 Rogue when I need to carry my daughter.

Fuck.. if anyone is hesitating on a S2k, buy it now and dont look back!

Being a convertible just adds to the charm of the s2k. I miss those top always down days.

Does anyone know if they actually fixed all the problems for the series II RX8s?

as unbiased and fact based as the "everyday driver" guys usually are, they failed to mention that each of their used cars (RX-8 & S2000) had higher MSRP sticker prices when they were sold on the show room floors. but I guess that's all a moot point as the winner (s2000) is very cheap to buy on the used market now.

I agree with death_blossom.. It's a little unfair to compare a new car to an older car because of the depreciation they would have suffered.

The S2K msrp would be close to double that of the FRS.

For ANY brand new car, you could find a used car in the same price range that will be better.

But what makes a new car better than a used car?

People buy new because they want to be the first owner or because there is a warranty and peace of mind regarding the car's history.

An s2k has very little issues if taken care of, the problem is finding a good one. Check the top to see if its ripping and get a compression test done and you'll be fine - the car is super reliable. That makes it comparable to the FRS even used.

The RX8 apparently isn't that reliable so then its not directly comparable because out of warranty those rotary engines seem iffy and gulp gas and oil. In the same way, people can get an e46 m3 for the same price as an FRS but you can't compare the two because of reliability and maintenance issues.

And like they said, they only did that comparo because its what their viewers asked for.

the super rare Series II RX-8s are way less prone to flooding problems.

the worst batch were the early release 04-05 cars...

06+ have had all their usual flooding stuff sorted out.

the annoying thing is the stupid ignition coils set up usually last about 50k kms...

but then there are people that have upgraded the stock ones for corvette LS1 coil packs....

my s2k has been problem free for the past 2 and 1/2 years I've owned.. but the past 2~3 months all of these parts took a shit at the same time - differential, axles, master cylinder, wheel bearings, radiator/coolant..

some of them are maintenance and wear parts but the differential breaking down shocked me.
all fixed/replaced now.. hope nothing happens...

After test driving my friend's FRS, it really impressed me. It's a very fun, responsive car to drive.

In a few years down the road, I'd probably buy myself a s2000 though.

Agree with the review that the s2k is the best of the three cars

that being said I really wanted a s2k but didn't want a soft top, more seats and the ability to carry track wheels which you can't in a s2k but is very possible in the FRS/BRZ

I would like to see them revisit this compasion after the FRS/BRZ have had a few models to mature and refine themselves

I got my FRS about two months ago and it's a great car. I was also cross shopping the S2K but little things like, 2 additional seats, larger trunk, hard top and the fact that a good condition AP2 S2K was basically the same price as a new FRS made it a no brainer for me.

However, I may pick one up as a third car in the future...

Also, it seems like S2K prices have actually gone up over the last few years. Looks like there's more demand than supply!
