Yahoo to buy Tumblr for $1.1 billion

Here's the only article I could find that wasn't behind a paywall or Gawker-affilliated: Yahoo Deal Shows Power Shift - WSJ.com

Yahoo destroyed Flickr, which used to be at the forefront of innovation, by enforcing integration with Yahoo accounts and banning anything above a PG-13 rating. Tumblr has a lot of porn, either real-life or the new My Little Pony cartoon, and it's all going to go.

First, Yahoo bans telecommuting, and now they're about to kill Tumblr.

Doesn't make sense to me to purchase Tumblr.

No, it doesn't. Tumblr is used by teens and twentysomethings, and Yahoo is used by everyone's grandparents and baby boomers who think Obama's the spawn of Satan.

Yahoo wants the userbase, which will abandon Tumblr when they sanitize the site.

^+1... Tumblr isn't going to get any more popular imo, and it is getting replaced by Instagram.

MG1 05-19-2013 09:40 PM

It's about control.

Bouncing Bettys 05-19-2013 10:14 PM

They should save their money and bring back chat rooms! :derp:

urrh 05-19-2013 11:53 PM

who would've thought yahoo still has a billion dollars

rsx 05-19-2013 11:55 PM

Yahoo is so out of touch

It makes total sense.
In a few years Tumblr will be as obscure as Yahoo.

BBMme 05-19-2013 11:59 PM

Where in the article does it say this?

"Yahoo plans to allow Mr. Karp to continue to run the site and operate largely separately from the rest of Yahoo, people familiar with the matter said."

BurnoutBinLaden 05-20-2013 12:22 AM

I'm not 100% convinced. Yahoo would not want want their brand associated with Tumblr's easily-accessible NSFW content. I suspect, at minimum, a mandatory filtering (e.g. "Click here if you are over 18")

kwy 05-20-2013 12:25 AM

They don't have to be strongly associated with it. They can own Tumblr but keep their distance. Avoid integration with the parent company and just let the advertising $$ roll in. I think that's what they plan on doing, judging by the article. Advertising on Tumblr is fairly low key right now. Really commercializing the brand will kill it, and I think Yahoo is aware of that.

murd0c 05-20-2013 12:44 AM

I'm surprised that Google isn't trying to buy it

Ronin 05-20-2013 12:46 AM

Yay! More things that Yahoo will buy and run into the ground!

Yahoo needs to start buying things that make money. Tumblr can't be monetized effectively.

CorneringArtist 05-20-2013 12:48 AM

Where will the hipsters turn to blog now with Tumblr purchased by a mainstream company :troll:?

You think it makes enough on ads to cover the 1.1 bill yahoo paid for it.

Honestly, when I read something like this, I think if Yahoo can buy a company for a billion dollars, one of several things happened:

1. Google, Apple and Facebook looked at it and thought it was junk

2. Google, Apple and Facebook looked at it and thought it was overpriced

Because they have money they could literally burn on an acquisition gamble that Yapoo just can't.

Fuck your webmail YaPoo! This guy is still bitter.

impactX 05-20-2013 07:23 AM

I still remember how Yahoo ran Geocities to the ground. It was a nice community while it lasted.

drunkrussian 05-20-2013 08:19 AM

yahoo still makes a LOT of money from advertising. A big way how is by owning or partnering with websites and running ads on them

If anything, Yahoo should burn to the ground. I literally forgot about them over the past year.

b0unce. [?] 05-20-2013 10:11 AM

Great, now Tumblr can afford to buy that missing "e."

Lomac 05-20-2013 10:43 AM

Yahoo.

:fuckthatshit:

Haven't used Yahoo in probably close to eight years.
