Body is shivering and weak

i woke up last night at 3 in the morning, uncontrollably shivering... afterwards didn't get much sleep after kept waking up cold and stuff.

this morning it was extremely difficult to get out of bed. I have the symptoms of a fever: shivering, weak body, throat hurts, however my head temp is normal??

called off work... laid in bed till 3 pm unwilling to leave the bed cause it was too cold.

anyone know whats going on???

:(

Matlock 05-28-2013 02:26 PM

lol 39.4 for the Canadians. ;)
I usually only get some shivers and weakness when I have a major fever.
Get well soon.

You have a fever, take ibuprofen. Even though you feel cold, do NOT bundle up. Use a light blanket, and make sure your head is not covered by anything.

ShadowBun 05-28-2013 09:12 PM

^ Hm, why not bundle up?
Thought it was a common Chinese thing to bundle up when you have a fever

Been doing it since small, bundle, sweat and next morning fever done.

That is literally the worst thing you can do when you have a fever.

Your body is overheating on its own, by bundling up, you are keeping that heat in, and allowing it to build up.

Your body can cope with a certain temperature. Anything over that, and you run into severe, permanent damage.

It sucks to feel like you're freezing to death, and if you care for someone you might want to comfort them with warmth. This is ignorant however, and can lead to major issues.

If it's a minor fever, you can get away with it if you are young and healthy of course. I'm not saying everyone who bundles up will cook their brains. But temperature needs to be monitored and regulated during a fever, especially infants and elderly. These are the ones you hear about dying from fevers induced from everything from infections to SARS to normal flus.

^ Yeap, I'm with ShadowBun on this one. I stacked like literally 4 layers of clothes including a puff jacket plus 2 layers of socks including wool socks and to top it all off, 3 layers of blankets and an icepack to the forehead. Within one sleep I was feeling totally better; keeping in mind I had a fever of about 39.9 degree Celsius and by the time I woke up it went down to 37 or so.

Mild Serotonin Syndrome. You've been taking too many dirty pills.

Of course you survived. I hope if you have babies or grandparents to take care of, someone more capable does it for you.

exactly opposite of what ive been doing all day:heckno:

Hmm, I thought that the body raising it's temperature was a mechanism to kill off bacteria/viruses. I could be wrong, but that's what I've heard.

rsx 05-28-2013 10:12 PM

I bundle up. I'd rather sweat it out, if you're temp is reaching close to 39-40, then you need to go to a doctor. When I was a kid I ran a 40 temp and was literally hallucinating, I ran out of the hospital (apparently) screaming. If it's running 38's I'd just keep warm, take ibuprofen and drink lots of water.

yeah same here.

ive read before you heat yourself out to sweat out all the bad stuff. skinny can u explain why?

Graeme S 05-28-2013 10:56 PM

I've always bundled up (or at least kept myself at what felt like a "comfortable" temperature), but in my websearching, it seems as though this is perhaps not the best idea. I'm not sure why, but...yeah.

I do remember when I had a particularly fierce fever with which even a single sheet made me feel like I was going to stew in my own sweat...which lasted for three or so days. Then I gave up and bundled up and sweated it up...and that night, the fever broke and I was better.

So while anecdotal evidence says bundling up is good, it seems as though Internet Doctors are on Skinny's side.

ShadowBun 05-28-2013 11:18 PM

What skinny said makes sense. (i.e. really high fever requires ice bath)
Bundle up is fine until your fever is too high. But by then, you should already be in the hospital.

SkinnyPupp 05-28-2013 11:20 PM

I think the reason it's bad to bundle up is because you can cook your brain if your temperature gets too high. Your other organs can deal with heat pretty well, but not your brain. Same reason you'd never go out in the sun without a hat (not pussy Vancouver sun... See how many people don't wear hats close to the equator, and try to imagine why Black African people evolved with the type of hair they have)

If ibuprofen isn't bringing the temp down enough, take a lukewarm bath. Drink some cold drinks, eat some cold food.

For normal healthy adults, it's not as big a deal, which is why you might assume that it's fine to do so. At that point, staying comfortable is the most important part. But if the temperature is getting too high, you have to take other steps to bring it down.

Reason why you fever up is because your body is trying to kill off bacteria in your system.
Therefore cooling down = bad
Fever, snots, coughing etc is sign of your body "healing" itself.
Rawr just tossed off my psyc notes so can't find this anymore but
Two psychologist (one was kraeplin forgot the other probably Freud or something) had these theories about flu and symptoms where
One was saying we get these certain symptoms such as fever, coughing, shivering because our body is trying to fight off the disease.
Taking supplements with iron is bad too because iron helps bacteria growth
Anyways text me if you need anything. Hope you get better soon broskies.
Sorry I'm not explaining properly had few drinks tonight.
Tldr don't bundle up but at the same time letting your body temperatures go too high can also kill you

Edit: "high body temperatures may inhibit some viruses and bacteria" - p 777 fundamentals of anatomy and physiology 8th edition by martini and nath
Don't have my psyc textbook so can't figure out sources for two psyc theories atm

I am the wiki king.

FYI, the dangerous temperature is anything above 40C.
