Need a new Dim Sum place to go to...

I have always gone to Dai Tung since 2003, but now it's changed a little in the sense that it doesn't have carts anymore and it's about $1.25-$1.50 more per plate then it use to be. Plus a couple of the items just don't taste the same. So now I need a new place that is good, preferably with a cart and charges roughly $2.50-$3.00 per plate. Doesn't really matter how far it is, just as long as its in the lower mainland. Suggestion?

You Viet?

On a more serious note, there aren't really any places that still use the carts. I think Flamingo House on Cambie still uses the carts but I'm not sure. If a cart is important then I'm afraid you're limiting yourself to basically no choices.

Here are a few places I like with no push carts. Not sure about prices either, for Dim I typically don't really care nor look because I find it minimal so you may have to look into that on your own, sorry mang.

Gingeri - Richmond
Jade - Richmond
Fisherman's Terrace - Richmond
Bing Sheng - East Side

Lucky Tao, Richmond, BC has good dim sum at the $2.50 - $3.00 range and even lower.

J & C Top Gun, Richmond, BC has very good dim sum. It is more than $3 per plate, but if you go BEFORE 11AM, you get a 40% discount. I believe you need to have one of their Top Gun cards to get the 40% discount. After 11AM, with the card, it is 20% discount. With the discounts, it is close to the $3 per plate range. When making reservations, ask for Vincent, Steven, or Jimmy, and they will always try to fit you in, even when it is full.

Otherwise, above $3, here is my recommendation:

Kirin, Richmond BC (the other Kirins are not as good). It is ALWAYS very, very good, and always consistent. If you want the barbecue crispy tarts (char siu soo) or the durian dessert, or the potato crispy plate (wu gok), you have to reserve them as those plates are brought out to the tables and are gone quickly.

Always make a reservation a day earlier. Or, if you make it ON the dim sum date, then they only take reservations for after 1:30PM sittings, ask for Yuki (one of the hostesses)

No carts at Dai Tung, just a picture menu that you order from.

Okay thanks for the suggestions, i'll give those a try.

I didn't know they served dim sum.

Are you referring to the other place on the third floor?

Golden Ocean on 41st still uses carts, decently priced, pretty good dim sum that's always been consistent. Neighborhood dim sum restaurant, I've been going there for 12 years!

Fortune City (3rd floor) serves it by ticket style. No carts unfortunately.

+1 for Golden Ocean on 41st. They have cart service but will also send more interesting dishes out, something I find you lose out on at places with carts.

Continental Seafood in Richmond on no.5 and Cambie has carts, nothing exciting, but nothing terrible.

If I recall it's the following

Small - $3.25
Medium - $3.95
Large - $4.50

So mid range pricing. I also think but don't quote me that like many places, if you go before a certain time you get like 10% off kind of thing.

heisenberg - As for Venice Garden, I'm not sure if they serve Dim Sum but that place is pretty nasty in general so I wouldn't trust it. All the place did was do a huge renovation and change their name so it's the same quality of shittiness from before with additional items on their menu.

That Venice Garden place is quite sketchy.

They've had problems with the government for tax evasion and other things as well

Does it make it any better now that they accept debit and credit?

Ming Dynasty on Nanaimo and Broadway is pretty dang good. My new favorite dim sum place. Although they do not serve dim sum in carts.

Aside from that, they have bombin deep fried squid!!! The best I've ever had!!

I'm assuming he likes to see what the food actually looks like before deciding to get it or not.

At least that's the 1 reason why I loved the carts. Otherwise, I hated them because you have to wait for your favorite items to come out and also make their way to you and that can take a while sometimes. Ordering off the menu is so much easier.

For me, it's part of the cultural experience. I know it sounds lame and antiquated but being able to see the food come out and being engaged in the experience is unique in itself. Also, there is no rush in terms of the social aspect.

Just a personal observation but in Los Angeles, a majority of restaurants that serve dim sum push cart style outperform those who do not in terms of sales, marketing and volume. You would think that it's the opposite but most people prefer push cart style. The restaurants that give you a menu to pick from are generally bare.
