| Hongkongers' sense of Chinese identity falls to 14-year low (interactive infograph) https://www.scmp.com/sites/default/f...y_yourself.swf Quote:
Fifteen years on from the handover, Hong Kong’s unique history and its ongoing integration with the mainland continue to shape how Hongkongers see themselves and their country. The University of Hong Kong Public Opinion Programme has been asking people the same question in regular surveys since 1997: “How would you identify yourself?”

Crazy how much it varies based on recent events... Tianmen massacre anniversary? I'm a Hong Kong Citizen. Big earthquake in China? We're all Chinese |

I feel like the people in HK are proud to say they are Chinese, but they make it very clear to separate themselves or let it be known that they are not from Mainland China.

In Vancouver, I identify myself as Chinese-Canadian.
Outside of Vancouver, I identify myself as Hong Kong-Canadian.

You can be proud of the soil from where your roots are from, but it doesn't mean that you're going to be proud of some of the people that come from there, or what goes on there. I'm proud of being chinese and to be from that land, but I'm certainly not proud of some chinese that take a shit in the planter or while they're riding on the subway. I may not agree with some of the things that the Socialist government has done, but I can see why they did what they did. I may not like all of the package, but it doesn't mean I'm not proud.

Quite a large number of my hongers I know share this point of view...
Personally: Hong Kong is/was British, we are born and raised Hongers. Don't ever associate us with those filthy mainlanders. Proud to be Hongers. We feel nostalgic about the good old days and how it will never be able to go back to the way it was.
Professionally: Must tolerate. Didn't have to before but China is now filthy rich. Hong Kong isn't as rich/useful/important as it was. China is where the money/power is. Must put on a straight face and endure. Convince the mainlanders that we are the same. Lets do business because we are all Chinese, like brothers. We can give you guys better deals than the other races so do business with us.
PS. During the Olympics, I only cared about the progress of the Canadians and Brits.

what's the point in all this fuss? we're all speaking Chinese (one dialect or another), eating Chinese food, have yellow skin, take our shoes off at the door, and driven by money right?
If it wasn't for China unloading all the tourist/investment/dirty money in Hong Kong instead of elsewhere, Hong Kong right now would probably just as sad as Macau (before all the new casinos).
All these people that go back to HK to make money would realize everything has to do with China. If you can't beat them, you gotta join them.

Sure, money talks, but money doesn't buy class. At least the Brits had 100+ years to civilize the Chinese that were fortunate enough to live in Hong Kong.
Mainlanders are very different culturally from Hongers and even further away culturally from white-washed Chinese like me. Posted via RS Mobile |

After living HK for the past 4 years, I have come to notice that Hongers are very racists. But what do you expect when they grew up living in a class society where SE asians are looked down upon, mainlanders are looked down upon and whites were superior. Hongers are very xenophobic and hypocritical. HK is based on finance, and that money comes from mainland. People in HK opened up factories and gained wealth due to the mainland yet despise them as they feel mainlanders are lower class. Sad really, as divided HK will not progress.
