Kessel aimed for scotts shins and ankle to ward him off, Kassian being a dumb brute swung his stick around full speed at head hunting height for no reason.
Scott has no injuries except maybe a few scuffs on his skates.
Gagner is out with a broken jaw.
Seems fair to me.

Agreed, although INTENT was different.
Kassian - wild, careless and stupid swing? Yes.
Intention to lop off Gagner's head? No.
Kessel - he was aiming to slash the legs, also speared him when he was already down on the ground. What if one of those swings managed to injure him?
Not saying that Kassian shouldn't be suspended, but Kessel got off way too easy. So if Sedin decides to attempt the same "self-defense" maneuvre but clips Ben Eager in the knee, causing him to to tear his ACL.
Is it still a slap on the wrist because Eager was clearly going for him but it's "justified" for Sedin to swing at his legs in self-defense because Kessel did?
This useless suspension to Kessel sets a precedence that all "non-fighters" can swing their stick at opposing players

Seems fair to me. | If you believe in penalizing based on the injury, then it's fair. IMO that's the worst way to assess a penalty.
Lumberjacking Kessel-style is the biggest bitch move in all of hockey IMO, well maybe just a bit better than spear to the balls. I think most people are willing to give him the first swing as 'self defense'. The second swing when Scott was already engaged with somebody else was boneheaded, and he'll admit as much. The final spear well after the fact, when his boy Clarkson was already taking care of business, just shows how much of a little twat Kessel really is. And he justifies it by saying "I'd like to see what you would do"  | |

I gota disagree in this context. Turtleing is true self defense/preservation in the case where you get jumped. If you goad a guy into fighting then turtle or walk away, sure I'll give you that.
Using your stick as a weapon? If you want to battle drop the gloves and go. Otherwise both guys get sticks and they can fence.

If Kessel turtled there the next week of highlights would be showing a "pussy" Kessel turteling while needing his team mates to defend him, while stick work is over the line I think Kessel of all people probably wants to save face a little as his image already is one of a wimp

People seem to forget that Kessel did take the time to fight Flynn in the midst of this brawl (I'd say he won that fight too). So its not like Kessel refused to engage anyone while swinging his stick around. He faced the music in a fair match.
Scott broke a very important unwritten rule in hockey so he gets no sympathy from me. He left himself open to almost any form of retribution short of a Bertuzzi. If you ask me, a couple wacks to the well protected shins, and the most weakest of spears is getting off easy. He will get his come uppins when next these two teams meet with Orr and McLaren in the line up.
Kessel's second slash and "spear" were messages to Scott saying: "Don't come to a non fighter, half your size, for a fucking fight or you will face my stick and next time I will make it count." Now that Kessel has instilled the threat of stick work into Scott's tiny brain, perhaps Scott will think twice before violating "the code." Scott may just realize his outmatched fighting opponent won't simply take a beating, turtle, or run away, but will defend himself and inflict whatever damage he can in the process. Sometimes just the threat of greater violence is enough to prevent conflict. Kessel went a little too far with that message, and so he sits. The punishment fits the crime.
Yet Kessel's suspension is not the vacation people are making it out to be. Instead of being able to build chemistry on the ice with his teammates to get the season rolling, Kessel sits. It makes it more difficult for Carlyle to create line combos and work on his PP without his main offensive threat there. One of Carlyle's strategies is the lack of set lines. He obsessively line matches and mixes up his lines on the fly to keep opponents guessing. Not having Kessel there, hinders that strategy.

Kessel was being attacked.
He shouldn't have taken the extra shots, but he was probably seeing red because someone like Scott has no business going after him. Players slash others when they're pissed all the time. Often times they don't even result in a 2 minute minor. Spearing can get you a game or two, in this case he got 3 as a result of the extra chops.
Kassian was being a tard.
You don't swing a stick violently enough to break a jaw just because you missed a hit.
Two completely different scenarios resulting in two different punishments. Why compare the two?
