Grabbing a small easy to manage item like a purse or very small bag between your feet that is already right near where your hands already are suppsed to be in a crash is one thing. But anytime Ive been on a plane, there is ALWAYS a (this is an observation, not a racist stereotype) stupid ass weakling asian woman struggling to shove a too big of bag in the overhead compartment, or struggling to remove it. You can bet the same woman would be the first one trying to grab their overhead carry on in a crash.

Another reason why people should really pay attention to the crew and safety videos when going through the emergency exits. I think we'll be hearing from passengers that the crew did a amazing job of getting everyone of the plane safely seeing that the casualty numbers are very low (so far).

Heard about this on a tech blog only because a Samsung exec was on board and tweeted about the crash. Facebooks COO (and three other Facebook staff) was supposed to be on the plane but re-booked at the last minute to United so her family could use up some reward miles.

Someone from CNN tweeted the Samsung exec back trying to get him on the phone to report on the crash and he declined saying he didn't want to "divert attention" from the crash. Good on him for saying FU to CNN.

I see this happen too often. Sometimes, I wished that my plane would crash so I could drop kick the bitch before I die.

Anyone who tries to defend the carry-on luggage argument is an idiot. I don't fucking care if your life is in your carry on. Every fucking second counts in an evacuation. The 777 was probably configured with 300+ seats. 300 adrenalin charged, scared people. You know when your boarding, as you walk down the isle with your fucking carry on as it's bouncing from one seat to the next, when your more or less calm. Try doing that with people fleeing for their lives. Your creating a disaster of a situation. Now your halfway to the exit, and realize it's not worth carrying your suitcase. So you drop it mid isle, fucking over every other person in the plane behind you. There is reasons why you are told to keep your carry on luggage stowed, and an evacuation is one of those reasons! Keep the isles clear!

Kudos to the backend crew for expeditiously clearing out the A/C. They aren't just a pretty face who pours your coffee, they are there for YOUR safety. Pay attention, and respect them.

Sad to see, but it should be an interesting report. Having flown in and out of SFO many times, it can be a tricky airport putting many people out of their comfort zone. Team that up with the Asian carrier crew communication issues, and perhaps a lack of experience from "out of the norm" approaches, this doesn't surprise me. The key will be in the details, unfortunately reports takes ages to be completed, but i'm sure it will be a learning experience.

I don't get why the landing would get screwed up regardless, it's basically automated on these planes

Its creepy to see one of the engines infront of the wings instead of snapping off.

According to the NOTAMS, ILS was inop for that runway. If the pilots overlooked the NOTAM and did an autoland .

why short Boeing when you can short the airline stock itself?

The Korean airlines had problems with safety regs in the past.

141 were Chinese, 77 were South Korean, 61 were American and one was Japanese. The dead were Chinese women.

- engines are designed to snap off backwards, they are held on with 4 bolts

- notice to airman for sfo states the computer system for landing is inoperative till end of july/beginning for august for both runways

- pilots could overlook that and used the guidance system for an autoland or assisted landing

- if they decide to auto land, the radio beam could be on for adjustment and misaligned, so the plane lands at a wrong angle

I doubt this is what took place, chances of people working on the ILS on a weekend are slim

NOTAM is an alert to pilots. Its kind of like a text message to warn you about shit going on thats relevant to you. Theres a SNOWTAM as well which, predictably, gives you notice about the snow situation at an airport.

ILS is instrument landing system. It gives you info about landing at the airport you're coming into. If you've seen Die Hard 2, you saw the part where (spoiler alert for a 20 year old movie) the terrorists hack the ILS and cause a plane to think its 200 feet higher than it really was. As a result, it slams into the runway and kills Miles O'Brien from Deep Space 9.

yray is basically saying that the pilot could have fucked up in a big way by being a lazy motherfucker.

Africa is faaaaaaar worse. A great deal of African-based airlines can't fly off of the continent due to the fact that their safety situation is... amazingly bad.

Oh Africa...

ATC can't authorize you to do an ILS approach when the ILS is out... Just doesn't happen.

After all these years flying, I'm only worried on landings as it's all based on the pilot's skill.

SFO was sending out emergency crew out even before plan crashed.

Pilot and tower must knew something was wrong.

I've always had a fear of flying China Southern/China Eastern/Air China (China Airlines included)...I thought that was an unwarranted fear because the international bodies taht govern aircraft safety was universal for international flights? Or are there tons of loopholes? I'd fly JAL/Singapore Air any day.
