Badminton fans and audience members were shocked on Sunday when two players in the men’s doubles final of the Canada Open, taking place at Richmond Oval, started throwing punches.
During a change, Thai competitor Bodin Issara lunged at fellow Thai Maneepong Jongjit, chasing him onto another court and then punching him several times.
The two are former partners and split in January.
Story continues below
Issara needed two stitches to his ear and both of the teams were disqualified. Issara was dragged away while his partner, Thai Pakkawat Vilailak, escorted off Jongjit, who had lost his shirt in the scuffle.
The two of them had already been disciplined due to a verbal exchange. Both teams were disqualified from the final.
The Badminton World Federation is now investigating.
“The events surrounding the conclusion of this match will be thoroughly investigated by the BWF,” the federation said in a statement on Monday. “The world-governing body has procedures in place to deal with such situations and this matter will be referred to the Disciplinary Committee.”
A professional badminton player who was watching the exchange said he was shocked the confrontation came to blows.
“In badminton there’s a lot of ego, a lot of testosterone going on, and it’s come close to this point many times before but I’ve never seen something go so over-the-top before,” said Luke Couture.
Richmond police were called to the scene, but officials had already broken up the fight. No one was charged in the fight.
Other players are hoping the match doesn’t set a bad precedent for the sport.
The guy in the orange should get a lifetime ban, what a fucking moron.

In sports, tension always builds up when the competition does, but I always think that modesty and maturity is the way to go even when provoked. Rather than fist fight, I would take it on the court

[23-07, 02:03] shawn79 do u go to vietnamese places for haircuts
So in the aftermath, the guy that chased and did the hitting ended up bleeding around his ear...
I read that the victim did manage to swing his racquet at the other guys' ear, but I watched the video a few times and couldn't spot the moment when that happened.
For a sport where fighting is very rare, I find it surprising that everyone was so passive in trying to stop the fight from happening.
It's not like the guy suddenly rushed in and started throwing punches. Everyone knew what was about to go down during that funny game of tag.
Even after the fight started, it took them forever to get in there and break it up.

Does anyone know which badminton facility this took place in? I have pretty much retired from the sport due to old age and injuries, so I don't recognize all the current places anymore. But as a former player, I am just absolutely floored. Being professional and national level athletes, even if they wanted to physically settle whatever grudges they have against each other, the scores should have been settled on the court in badminton match.

I was at the Oval that day and wondered why there were RCMP talking to someone in the lobby. Didn't know this happened until a day later. They were ex-partners who finished top 8 at the olympics last year. the guy who was the "victim" apparently quit badminton right after olympics but came back with a new partner
