Proved my point and how I said the officer will get a court date

Been saying this the entire time but there are ALWAYS procedures to follow when dealing with a stand off situation. If this was a 1 on 1 situation, then sure as heck fire away until he is put down, but this was a standoff situation where he was surrounded.

***........crickets........***

I don't know how anyone could watch the video of the kid just standing there barely moving and claim he was "advancing" on police in a threatening manner.

I respect the decision made by SIU, as they have a lot of information we didn't know. Interested to see the end result of trial.

that, and Police will be hesitant using the firearm, and will be severely injured, but oh well, it's part of the job right?

on the news tonight they said 5/5 of the previous trials that had officers sentenced by the SIU have all been acquitted, all five were either second degree murder or manslaughter

unless somthing tangible comes out of it, who cares? it amounts to nothing

I'm guessing this second-degree murder charge is to please the family and the protesters. An effort to show that the officer is being held accountable for his actions, even though reports state that he is devastated by his actions. Yatim's sister has tweeted "Good Morning Justice!" Well, she sounds happy. Another fire put out is good PR. I am interested to see what happens next, if anything at all.

This is in Vancouver. Suspect has a knife, far more agitated and threatening than the suspect in the Ontario video, taken down with a bean bag gun, and several officers charge and subdue him.

Interesting comparison of reaction by the police. While I do think the charges against the officer in the ontario video are totally justified and that the suspect didnt need to be shot, in this situation the cops have a much better view of exactly what the suspect is doing, so certainly that should be taken into account.

Local Media has reported it as a knife, in U tube description it says Needle.

Not sure how much of a difference it really makes in these cases for the sake of this comparison, either way you don’t want to be within reach of the object, one can tear you up faster the other will could possibly infect the victim.

Keeping the person armed with the object out of striking distance would be paramount to someone’s safety in both cases.

Not commenting on this case. But it's funny, I was in Toronto on business during the two weeks when this occured.

It was my first time staying in Toronto and the first thing I noticed.

1. There is a shitload of cops in Toronto
2. We think the VPD/RCMP in Vancouver are jerks, they are pussycats compared to the police in Toronto. Obviously a generalization, but the one's I ran into were complete douchebags.

This is merely a follow up piece of reporting, and it doesn't really add anything new to the case as trial has yet to begin. But for those who remember this case and still has a lingering interest on it, it might offer some additional facts you may or may not have known from before:

YouTube video had huge impact on Sammy Yatim case | Toronto Star

So it looks like the trial will finally begin today:

Here is the in-bus surveillance video that captured much of the proceeding. Be forewarned -- it's graphic.

Sammy Yatim's streetcar driver takes stand at James Forcillo's trial - Toronto - CBC News

There are many, many questions to be asked. The couple of items that I thought are worth highlighting are:

Quote:
As the teen walked back toward the rear of the streetcar, Seymour got off the vehicle. But then, Yatim asked where he was going, so the driver stepped back on.

Then Yatim said, "Go, go, go, I'm not going to hold you for ransom," and "I'm not going to hold you as hostage."

The driver left the streetcar moments later.
Quote:
Forcillo yelled "drop your knife" repeatedly. Yatim said, "no" and the officer told Yatim if he took a step forward he would be shot.

Forcillo was the only one to fire, shooting Yatim eight times. The first volley hit the teen's heart, severed his spine and fractured his arm as he fell to the floor of the streetcar. There was a brief pause and then six shots followed, including ones that hit Yatim's abdomen and penis.

Sgt. Dusan (Dan) Pravica arrived and used a conducted energy weapon on Yatim who was already fatally wounded. He kicked the knife out of the victim's hand and Yatim was handcuffed.

I am not sure what you might be thinking of / referring to here, SumAznGuy. My position on the shooting has been quite clear, as described in previous postings in this thread, so I don't think I will elaborate on those again.

And the verdict is out -- Forcillo is found guilty of attempted murder in shooting death of Sammy Yatim, but not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

The attempted murder charge was related to the second volley of shots, which were fired while Yatim was lying on the floor of the streetcar.

Forcillo guilty of attempted murder in shooting death of Sammy Yatim | Toronto Star

its attempted murder because they concluded the first volley of shots were justified, the second volley was not. his killing was deemed justified homicide from the first volley, you cant be charged with murdering someone who was already dead, but since his intention was to kill him, its attempted murder.

it makes perfect sense to me, i think anyone who cares to think it through logically should be able to understand it
